2 Samuel 9 Pay It Forward

ROMANS 15: 4 “For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” 2 TIMOTHY 3: “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

2 Samuel 9 Outline A.David intends to favor the survivors in Saul’s family (9: 1) B.David speaks to Saul’s servant Ziba (9: 2 - 5) C.David expresses favor to Mephibosheth (9: 6 - 8)

B’.David speaks to Saul’s servant Ziba (9: a) A’.David implements favor to survivors in Saul’s family (9: 11b-13) R.F. YOUNGBLOOD 2 Samuel 9 Outline (cont.)

2 Samuel 4:4 “(Jonathan son of Saul had a son who was lame in both feet. He was five years old when the news about Saul and Jonathan came from Jezreel. His nurse picked him up, and fled, but as she hurried to leave, he fell and became crippled. His name was Mephibosheth.)”

1 Samuel 20:12 – “Then Jonathan said to David: ‘By the Lord, the God of Israel, I will surely sound out my father by this time the day after tomorrow! If he is favorably disposed toward you, will I not send you word and let you know? 13 But if my father is inclined to harm you, may the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if I do not let you know and send you away safely. May the Lord be with you as he has been with my father.

14 But show me unfailing kindness like that of the Lord as long as I live, so that I may not be killed, 15 and do not ever cut off your kindness from my family – not even when the Lord has cut off every one of David’s enemies from the face of the earth.” 16 So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, “May the Lord call David’s enemies to account.” 17 And Jonathan had David reaffirm his oath out of love for him, because be loved him as he loved himself.

Jeremiah 9: This is what the lord says: “Let not the wise man boast of this wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, 24 but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understand and knows me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,” declares the Lord.

2 Samuel 9 Application 1.*You are to be generous in kindness and mercy towards others, especially those who do not deserve such treatment. *You are to initiate such kindness, mercy and thoughtfulness. *You are to treat others in a way that reflects and imitates the way God has treated you.

2 Samuel 9 Application (cont.) KEY WORD: “HESED” *Steadfast covenant loyalty *Generous kindness *Mercy / lovingkindness *A word used of God who obligates Himself to His people to care for them and love them *To be for them *9:1, 9:3, 9:7, 10:2

Ephesians 4:32 ~Be kind ~Just as in Christ God forgave you ~Forgiving on another ~Compassionate to one another

Psalm 40: 2 - 3, 5 “He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the Lord.” “ Many, O Lord my God, are the wonders you have done. The things you planned for us no one can recount to you; were I to speak And tell of them, they would be too many to declare.”

Psalm 23: 6 Psalm 51:1 “Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” “Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgression.”

“You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us, in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! For if, when we were God’s enemies, we were Romans 5:6 - 10

reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!”

Luke 9: ““Master,” said John, “we saw a man driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.” “Do not stop him,” Jesus said, “for whoever is not against you is for you.””

List of Things Christians Put Ahead of Generous Love and Kindness *Denominationalism * Non-denominationalism * Experience * Non-Experience * Styles of Worship * Preferences in Theology -“If you don’t agree, you’re of the devil.” -“All that don’t agree are bad.” -“God can’t use them.”

(cont.) * Methods -“If you don’t give altar calls, you’re a coward.” -“You’re not preaching the true Gospel.” * Politics -“I don’t think anyone can be a believer unless they’re in agree- ment with me in politics.”

* Gnosticism -“I know something you don’t know and it makes me better than you and closer to God.” (cont.)

James 3: “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such ‘wisdom’ does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. But the wisdom that comes from heaven is

first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.”

Proverbs 6: “There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.”
