Growth Drivers: Powder Coating Global Powder Equipment Market Growth in Standard of Living in Emerging Markets Demand for durable goods Productivity & Profitability Color change time improvement Line speed increase & up time Material savings Quality of finish Customization Environmental Concerns Emission reduction - no solvents Ability to recycle unused powder Total Powder Coating market is growing… Global Share of Powder Coating Manufacturing …with Asia becoming the largest market Main reasons to convert to Powder are: Regulation – emission reduction BPA free Energy Savings Better protection “greener” Speaking for Container main reasons for capital spending are: Improve Quality Less Spoilage Reduce Material Higher Line Speed Reduction of People Marketing (New design packaging required) like But Light Bottle Saver Product ROI must be less than a year Doug, The key drivers for capital investment in North America this past year have been: 1- Safety issues - over $1M in powder pipe coating booths to eliminate fires. 2- Plant consolidations - Metalcraft, Cooper, John Deere and Whirlpool have all consolidated plants and products to other locations causing booth purchases. 3- Adding more colors to their products - Briggs & Stratton, Harley Davidson. Let me know if you need any additional information. Thanks! Steve Some additional comments based on listing from Andreas. To avoid solvent emissions “all” canmakers have afterburners but to run these they use fuel. Fuel on the other hand emits CO-2. CO-2, certainly in Europe, is a target for reduction. At the time (many years ago) this was the main driver for Boxal to start looking into the powder. In the end there needs to be a pay back or a cost reduction to make the investment. Savings in addition to the ones Andreas mentioned; - Afterburner cost. No need for an afterburner at all. - Cleaning time (no production while cleaning) of all the Liquid related installations. Extraction hoods, ductwork, guns, etc) - Certainly in the Aerosol market (Monobloc) they do have different liquid coatings for the different fillings of the can. The idea was to have one powder fit for all fillings so they can save on set up time. For Powder by far number one is emissions! If I have to rank why the buy: Quality increase which results in less spoilage Material savings Energy reduction (Induction) Hope this helps Andreas 20 Source: Powder Coating Institute, BCC Research and Nordson
