There are 4 sectors of the economy ppl might work in.

gather raw materials from natural environment.

Change form of raw materials into manufactured goods.

Business or professional services and grows with urbanization.

Information systems, management, research- someone who manipulates or tracks data. More than providing a service.

MDCs have less ppl employed in the Primary Sector, while LDCs will have More ppl employed in this sector MDCs have more ppl employed in the Tertiary and Quaternary Sector, while LDCs will have less ppl employed in this sector

DIAMONDS Primary- Person mining diamonds Secondary- diamond cutter, jeweler Tertiary- diamond salesperson Quaternary- someone tracking diamond sales Now, with a partner come up with an example like this on your own. You will have 5 minutes! Be ready to share with the class.

Read about Economies on pg Complete Cornell Notes as you read. Complete chart on pg 284 for the economic systems Questions for Homework: 1. How do different societies around the world meet their economic needs? 2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each economic system?

Imagine you are moving into a new house, maybe your first apartment. You need to fill your fridge and cupboard with food because you don’t want to go out to eat or rely on fast food. Make a list of the food you would need to purchase at the grocery store. #1 - Shopping Without a Plan and a Map.

Next to each item on your grocery list write down from what this product is made of or where it came from. EXAMPLE: Ragu Spaghetti Sauce- tomatoes

Use the maps on page to determine where these products might come from Write 2-3 countries the item could have come from next to each item on your grocery list. Be ready to share Be sure to remember these products come from basic grains, vegetables, etc. look for those basics on the maps

Did you have the same countries listed next to your item? If not, add the countries you didn’t have to your item. Discuss that. Why might it be produced there?

Before agriculture, ppl were hunters and gathers Travelled frequently, following herds Women collected roots, berries, and nuts Men hunted game or fished Today, ¼ million people are still hunters and gatherers Isolated areas of Africa, Australia, and South America African Bushmen of Namibia and Botswana and Aborigines of Australia Not clear if early H&G intentionally planted or if it was through observation

Ag= deliberate modification of Earth’s surface thru crops and livestock Cultivate= to care for Vegetative planting= reproduction of plants by direct cloning of existing plants- planting stems and roots Seed agriculture= reproduction of plants by planting seeds. * most commonly practiced today

Vegetative Planting Origin- SE Asia Diffused to other areas of the world such as China, Japan, India, tropical Africa and the Mediterranean Seed agriculture Origin- more than one hearth 1) Western India, Northern China, and Ethiopia 2) Diffused to western India and SW Asia

Vegetative planting is the reproduction of plants by direct cloning from existing plants. The practice originated primarily in Southeast Asia, according to Carl Sauer. Two other early centers of vegetative planting were in West Africa and northwestern South America. From these hearths, the practice diffused to other regions.

Seed agriculture may have originated in several hearths, including western India, northern China, and Ethiopia. Southern Mexico and northwestern South America may have been other early hearths. Early advances were made in Southwest Asia.

Main difference bt agriculture in MDC and LDC is MDC practice commercial agriculture and in LDC they practice subsistence agriculture Subsistence agriculture= production of food primarily for self consumption. Commercial agriculture= production of food for sale off of the farm. Ask yourself, does it stay on the farm or does it leave the farm?

A priority for all people is to secure the food they need to survive. In less developed countries most people work in agriculture to produce the food they and their families require. In more developed countries few people are farmers, and most people buy food with money earned by working in factories or offices or by performing other services.
