Background (from Singapore, PSE 2012, News Release) The International Symposia on Process Systems Engineering – triennial since 1982. Organized by the International Organisation for Process Systems Engineering (IOPSE) with representations from the Asia Pacific Confederation of Chemical Engineering, the European Federation of Chemical Engineering, and the Inter-American Confederation of Chemical Engineering. Global platform for the PSE academics, researchers, and practitioners from all corners of the world for sharing advances in PSE education, research, and application.

Previous Locations PSE-1982 Kyoto, Japan PSE-1985 Cambridge, England PSE-1988 Sydney, Australia PSE-1991 Montebello, Quebec PSE-1994 Kyongju, Korea PSE-1997 Trondheim, Norway PSE-2000 Breckenridge, CO (16-21 July 2000) Reklaitis and Siirola, 260 participants, 254 papers PSE-2003 Kunming, China PSE-2006 Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany PSE-2009 Salvador, Brazil PSE-2012 Singapore PSE-2015 Copenhagen (31 May – 3 June, 2015) Joint with ESCAPE-25

Recent History PSE-2006 Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany Around 350 participants, around 125 oral presentations and 240 poster presentations PSE-2009 Salvador, Brazil 365 registrants, 275 from academic circles and 90 from the private sector, with 25 companies represented. 196 delegates from Brazil, 33 from the rest of Latin America, 76 from Europe, 26 from USA/Can, 36 from Asia and one from Africa. Students comprised 35% of attendees. 114 oral presentations (plenary, keynote and regular lectures) and 226 posters PSE-2012 Singapore 360 registrants from 35 countries. 219 Full Registrations; 139 student registrations 207 from Asia + Australia; 100 from Europe; 32 from North America; 17 from South America and 4 from Africa 190 oral presentations (plenary, keynote and regular) and 153 posters PSE-2015 Copenhagen also expecting close to 400 participants

Ideas/Issues Preferable to host PSE-2018 in a major US city International conference Prefer not to add shuttle/short flight travel to those coming from Europe or Asia Larger than “typical” CACHE-sponsored conference Perhaps 300-400 attendees From CACHE Minutes, 20-21 April 2001, Galveston. Review of past conferences – Edgar: PSE 2000: Low attendance, but income and operating expenses seems roughly to have broken even. The CACHE Minutes, 16-18 November, 2000, Los Angeles indicate 260 people and 254 papers at PSE 2000. It is clear that there were issues with how Keystone handled room attrition. The original contract (1998) was for 300 rooms, using a % of room total basis, before the hotel expanded.

Suggested Potential Chairs Larry Biegler Chris Floudas Ignacio Grossmann Mahmoud El-Halwagi (will need assistance with entertainment…) Kevin Furman (ExxonMobil) – co-chair or programming committee

Suggested Timeline CACHE agrees to provide financial backing In principle, now Small advisory committee from CACHE and CAST Soon Name Chair by 15 July 2013 Chair spearheads official proposal to CACHE CACHE approval in San Francisco, 8/9 November 2013 Proposal to IOPSE by 30 November 2013 Need suggested structure/details from Rafiq Gani Is final location needed by then?
