4 What does it look like in our school district? Assessment of English Language Proficiency – California English Language Development Test (CELDT) Comparison of Performance in Basic Skills – California Standards Test (CST) English Language Arts and Math Teacher Evaluation – Report Card Parent Opinion and Consultation

5 CELDT Data Student scores a 4 or 5 (Early- Advanced or Advanced) overall No sub test is below a 3 (Intermediate)

6 CST Data Student scores a level 3 (Basic) or above in English Language Arts Student scores a level 3 (Basic) or above in Math

7 Teacher Evaluation Grades are at a level 3 (basic) or above in reading, writing, and math Student consistently writes at a level 3 or above on the District Writing Scoring Guide in on-going classroom assignments

8 Parent Opinion and Consultation Provide notice in writing in English and primary language of the student, conference or telephone contact to parents/guardians of their right to participate in the reclassification process Encourage them to participate in face-to- face meeting Parent signature on form or verification of contact by school personnel

9 *The important criteria is that the student has English proficiency comparable to that of the majority of pupils of the same age or grade whose primary language is English.

11 Placement of Reclassified Students Any English Learner Program Option (Structured English Immersion, Alternative Program) Mainstream Classroom

12 What happens after reclassification? Reclassify student as fluent English proficient (FEP) Notify parents/guardians of reclassification Update school and district records Monitor the student for two years to determine if he/she is able to progress in the regular classroom

13 What happens if a reclassified student does not progress in a regular classroom? Student Study Team may recommend assistance from the bilingual instructional assistant (See Language Reclassification Follow-Up Form) Student Study Team may recommend that student be placed in a bilingual classroom (if available)
