EGEE-II INFSO-RI Enabling Grids for E-sciencE NA2 report for LIP-Lisbon Gabriel Amoros on behalf of LIP-Lisbon J. Aparício, G. Barreira, Gonçalo Borges, M. David, J. Gomes, J.P. Martins LIP Lisboa NA2 Meeting, November 2007

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-II INFSO-RI About LIP LIP is a Portuguese scientific research Lab –Devoted to High Energy Physics –Funded by the Portuguese public funding agencies –Private non-profit association –Created in 1986 when Portugal joined CERN –LIP has three centres:  Lisbon, Coimbra and Faro LIP participation in physics experiments: –Atlas, CMS, Compass, Auger, AMS, SNO, Zeplin, Hades, n-TOF, … Other activities include: –Building DAQ systems and detectors –Detectors R&D –Medical physics, Geant4 –Grid computing –Electronics, precision mechanics LHC - CERN

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-II INFSO-RI LIP staff and projects LIP has previously participated – EDG and CROSSGRID and is presently working in – EGEE, EELA and INTEUGRID EU projects EGEE Grid LIP team (6 people) – Mainly devoted to SA1 activities  LIP SWE ROC  LIP takes part of the SWE ROC Operation of core services Coordinating GRID operation problems Certifying Portuguese sites Negotiating service level agreements (SLA’s) Operates LIPCA: Portuguese Certification Authority – NA3 and NA2 activities are shared among the staff  Normally performed in the SA1 framework

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-II INFSO-RI Talks & Seminars ~ 15 Seminars/Talks since Apr 2006 –Ranging from International Conferences to Universities and High School seminars Most relevant seminars where EGEE and gLite middleware was “advertised” –Int.EU.Grid KOM, 06/2006, > 80 part. –CISTI Conference, 06/2006, 80 part.  Scientific paper in conference proceeding –Lauching of the Portuguese Grid Initiative, 06/2006, > 100 part. –Cracow Grid Workshop, 11/2006, > 150 part.  Scientific paper in Conference proceedings –IBERGRID Conference, 05/2007, > 200 part.  2 scientific papers in Conference proceedings –HP Meeting on “Grid and HPC”, 09/2007,~30 part. –EGEE’06 and EGEE’07 Conferences

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-II INFSO-RI Media Relations and User Induction Press cuttings with references to EGEE –Newspaper “Público” with ~50000 nb/day (05/2006)  Regarding the Avian Flu Data Chalenge in EGEE  Regarding Portuguese Investiment in Grid Computing –On-line newspaper “TV Ciência On-line” (09/2006)  Article regarding Grid Computing and EGEE in General –Minho University newspaper (11/2006)  Generic article regarding Grid Computing gLite and Int.EU.Grid Tutorial for end-users (11/2007) –30 participants –First part of the tutorial consisted mainly in EGEE dissemination this will be repeated in comming introductory tutorials

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-II INFSO-RI Events (Co-) Organized Events Organized, Co-organized or sponsored by LIP since April 2006 where EGEE dissemination was present –INGRID’06 (Nov 2006)  Workshop to prepare the Portuguese Grid Iniciative  A strong focus on EGEE was prepared with the participation of Portuguese EGEE members and key persons of the EGEE project –IBERGRID (May 2006)  First Iberic Conference on Grid Computing  Again a strong focus on EGEE was given in the conference agenda were LIP had a strong participation as Portuguese member of the conference organization –Open Workshop on e-Infrastructures” (Oct 2006)  e-IRG meeting in Lisbon  The EGEE project and SouthWest federation were presented in the context of the Portuguese grid activities

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-II INFSO-RI Building the INGRID+ infrastructure INGRID+ Main Site Worldwide LCG Computing Grid (WLCG) : Ingrid + LIP-Lisboa, LIP-Coimbra EGEE-II National Base: Ingrid+, LIP-Lisboa, LIP- Coimbra, Univ. do Porto, Univ. do Minho, Univ. Lusíada, IEETA INGRID projects LIP will be a leading partner in INGRID+ INGRID+ will start with the gLite infrastructure already in place in Portugal – EGEE, int.eu.grid, EELA Core services deployed at –FCCN (INGRID+ Main site) –LIP computer centre –Services and infrastructure managed by LIP The Portuguese NGI was officially launched in 29 April 2006 by the Ministry of Science –Deployment of a grid infrastructure (INGRID+) in coordination with IBERGRID and other international initiative The Portuguese national grid initiative resulted from the LIP dissemination efforts near the academic community and government (Ministry of Science) Prof Gaspar Barreira an LIP EGEE team member has been extremely active in this area

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-II INFSO-RI INGRID+ Welcome new users –Provide adequate training –Establish new virtual organizations –Integrate new resources Deploy and support new middleware services targeted at the user needs –Enhance the infrastructure –Follow the technology Coordination with other European infrastructures extremely important –IBERGRID –Major grid infrastructures such as EGEE

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-II INFSO-RI Conclusions The income of LIP activities in Portugal has originated –increase in the number of sites from 1 to 6 in 2 years  Lip-Lisbon, Lip-Coimbra  UPorto (3 Clusters)  DI-UMINHO  ClusterUL  IEETA (PPS)  Currently working with other organizations to deploy new sites (IST and several other contacts) –Huge effort on giving user support to deploy those sites  Which is the next step after dessimination LIP will drive (technically!) the Portuguese NGI and will play an important role in related projects as IBERGRID –Use/Expand gLite middleware and proposed EGEE solutions

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-II INFSO-RI Future Work Organization of events – Tutorials for site admins and end-users; Portuguese GRID open day Continue the set of seminars with the academic community and industry Continue the set of seminars with the academic community and industry Apply to international Grid Conferences Apply to international Grid Conferences – Produce scientific papers related to Grid Operations and Support Increase the governmental contacts Increase the governmental contacts – Due to LIP involvement in the Portuguese NGI Maintenance of the public web page Maintenance of the public web page Production/Translation of Portuguese specific dissemination material Production/Translation of Portuguese specific dissemination material – Press Releases; Brochures and posters
