Getting acquainted with Jesus as portrayed by His biographers. What do we see Jesus saying and doing in these four biographies that we ought to be saying and doing in our lives?

Jesus’ teaching: The simplicity of (5-7, 13) The bluntness of (7, 23) The basis of (4:4, 6, 7, 10)

Mark is said to have obtained his information from Peter, an eye and ear-witness to Christ, and thus very reliable, and dated around A.D. 60.

 Irenaeus (180 AD) After their departure (death of Peter and Paul), Mark the disciple and interpreter of Peter, did also hand down to us in writing what had been preached by Peter. ISBE,  Clement of Alexandria (next decade) Mark wrote his Gospel from matter preached by Peter, ibid.

 Papias (115 AD) And John the Presbyter also said this, Mark being the interpreter of Peter whatsoever he recorded he wrote with great accuracy but not however, in the order in which it was spoken or done by our Lord, for he neither heard nor followed our Lord, but as before said, he was in company with Peter, who gave him such instruction as was

necessary, but not to give a history of our Lord's discourses: wherefore Mark has not erred in any thing, by writing some things as he has recorded them; for he was carefully attentive to one thing, not to pass by any thing that he heard, or to state any thing falsely in these accounts.

Scriptures which could be interpreted as being in agreement with these uninspired remarks.

Mark was with Peter when he wrote his first epistle and the two were evidently very close ( my son Mark, 1 Pet. 5:13).

12 Therefore, I will always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them, and have been established in the truth which is present with you. 13 I consider it right, as long as I am in this earthly dwelling, to stir you up by way of reminder, 14 knowing that the laying aside of my earthly dwelling is imminent, as also our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. 15 And I will also be diligent that at any time after my departure you will be able to call these things to mind. 2 Pet. 1:12-15

This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you in which I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, 2 that you should remember the words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken by your apostles. 2 Pet. 3:1

18 Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. 19 Going on a little farther, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who were also in the boat mending the nets. 20 Immediately He called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went away to follow Him. 21 They went into Capernaum; and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and began to teach. 1:18-21

1:18-21

The words "straightway” or “immediately” 88 times in the NT---42 times in Mark (10 in chapter 1)

Eph. 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. 1-Jesus’ life was one of constant activity the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked. 1 Jo. 2:6

Eph. 4:12 the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; 1-Jesus’ life was one of constant activity the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked. 1 Jo. 2:6

1 Cor. 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord. 1-Jesus’ life was one of constant activity the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked. 1 Jo. 2:6

1 Tim. 5:10 if she has devoted herself to every good work. 1-Jesus’ life was one of constant activity the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked. 1 Jo. 2:6

Jas. 4:17 Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin. 1-Jesus’ life was one of constant activity the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked. 1 Jo. 2:6

John 15:1-2 I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit. 1-Jesus’ life was one of constant activity the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked. 1 Jo. 2:6

Rom 7:4 Therefore, my brethren, you also were made to die to the Law through the body of Christ, so that you might be joined to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. 1-Jesus’ life was one of constant activity the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked. 1 Jo. 2:6

In view of the active nature of Jesus’ life…. In view of the fact I’m to live as He lived…. In view the statements by Paul, James and Jesus…. How active are you… In the work of the Lord? In the good works we should be walking in? In serving and building up others? In bearing fruit? Jas. 4:17 Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.

John 9:4 We must work the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work. 2-Jesus’ activity had an urgency about it the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked. 1 Jo. 2:6

Acts 8:36-37 As they went along the road they came to some water; and the eunuch said, "Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptized?" 2-Jesus’ activity had an urgency about it the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked. 1 Jo. 2:6

Acts 22:16 Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name. 2-Jesus’ activity had an urgency about it the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked. 1 Jo. 2:6

Acts 16:33 And he took them that very hour of the night and washed their wounds, and immediately he was baptized, he and all his household. 2-Jesus’ activity had an urgency about it the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked. 1 Jo. 2:6

Heb. 3:7,15; 4:7 Today if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts 2 Cor. 6:2 now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation 2-Jesus’ activity had an urgency about it the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked. 1 Jo. 2:6

Mark’s crucifixion account Mark It was the third hour when they crucified him. 26 The written notice of the charge against him read: THE KING OF THE JEWS. 27 They crucified two robbers with him, one on his right and one on his left.

Mark’s crucifixion account Mark Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, "So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, 30 come down from the cross and save yourself

Mark’s crucifixion account Mark In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. "He saved others," they said, "but he can't save himself! 32 Let this Christ, this King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe." Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

Mark’s crucifixion account Mark At the sixth hour darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?"-which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" 35 When some of those standing near heard this, they said, "Listen,

Mark’s crucifixion account Mark 16 he's calling Elijah." 36 One man ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a stick, and offered it to Jesus to drink. "Now leave him alone. Let's see if Elijah comes to take him down," he said. 37 With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.
