Purposes & Results of Fasting

Fasting Workshop TEAM Discipleship

Arthur Wallis “The cry of a man’s stomach helped to down the voice of God in the Garden of Eden.”

Derek Prince Fasting is: “the voluntary abstaining from food for spiritual purposes.”

Isaiah "Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet. Declare to my people their rebellion and to the house of Jacob their sins. 2 For day after day they seek me out; they seem eager to know my ways, as if they were a nation that does what is right and has not forsaken the commands of its God. They ask me for just decisions and seem eager for God to come near them.

Isaiah 'Why have we fasted,' they say, 'and you have not seen it? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you have not noticed?' "Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please and exploit all your workers. 4 Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife, and in striking each other with wicked fists. You cannot fast as you do today and expect your voice to be heard on high. 5 Is this the kind of fast I have chosen, only a day for a man to humble himself? Is it only for bowing one's head like a reed and for lying on sackcloth and ashes? Is that what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the LORD?

Isaiah "Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? 7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter-- when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? 8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.

Isaiah Then you will call, and the LORD will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I. "If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, 10 and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.

Isaiah The LORD will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail. 12 Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and will raise up the age-old foundations; you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.

John Wesley ‘First, let it be done unto the Lord, with our eye singly fixed on Him. Let our intention herein be this, and this alone, to glorify our Father which is in Heaven; to express our sorrow and shame for our manifold transgressions of His holy law; to wait for an increase of purifying grace, drawing our affections to things above; to add seriousness and to obtain all the great precious promises which He hath made to us in Jesus Christ …

John Wesley ‘… Let us beware of fancying we merit anything of God by our fasting. We cannot be too often warned of this; inasmuch as a desire to “establish our own righteousness,” to procure salvation of debt and not of grace, is so deeply rooted in all our hearts. Fasting is only a way which God hath ordained, wherein we wait for His unmerited mercy; and wherein, without any desert of ours, He hath promised freely to give us His blessing.’

Types of Fasts A Normal fast: abstaining from all food, but consumption of water is maintained. An Absolute fast: abstaining from all food and liquid. A Partial fast: abstaining from a particular part of one’s diet.

Arthur Wallis “A right act has all of its value robbed in the sight of God if done with wrong motives.”

What is our motivation for fasting?

First Time Fasting Start with a shorter ‘normal’ fast. Start after lunch one day and conclude with lunch the next day. Allow fruit juice intake. Eventually substitute water for fruit juice. Slowly extend the length of the fast. It is best to enter the discipline slowly and methodically.

Confession Workshop TEAM Discipleship

Richard Foster “Confession of evil works is the first beginning of good works.”

Philippians 2.12 “…work out your salvation with fear and trembling.”

Public v. Private Confession Does confession have to be public or is private confession good enough?

Dietrich Bonhoeffer “… been given to us to help us. He hears the confession of our sins in Christ’s stead and he forgives our sins in Christ’s name. He keeps the secret of our confession as God keeps it. When I go to my brother to confess, I am going to God.”

1 John 1.9 “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Who to confess to: This person should be someone who: 1. Keeps confidences – just like God; 2. Can demonstrate empathy and understanding without being judgmental; 3. Is Spiritually mature and able to pronounce forgiveness in Jesus’ name; 4. Is not horrified by a sin or trivializes a sin.

Hearing a Confession: 1. Listen carefully, prompting further confession but never interrupting; 2. Have knowledge of our own sins and how God has forgiven us; 3. Know the confession is a sacred occasion; 4. Put the cross between the confessor and yourself; 5. Pray constantly, show God’s love and pronounce forgiveness.
