ASIACOVER Spatial Database Engine Based on GeoNetwork OpenSource Technology

FAO GeoNetwork and ASIACOVER Improve access and use of geographic data and information

The GeoNetwork Concept n A Spatial Data Infrastructure that –Provides easy to use tools to accomplish data sharing and use –Allows for distributed maintenance and ownership of data

The GeoNetwork Concept n A portal that integrates –Metadata search and maintenance functions –Data distribution and publication functions

The GeoNetwork Concept n A portal that integrates –Interactive access to Geographic Data from distributed sources through Internet Mapping Services (InterMap) –Distributed databases for data & metadata

The GeoNetwork Concept n A Spatial Data Infrastructure that –Implements widely accepted standards (United Nations Geographic Information Working Group (UNGIWG))

The GeoNetwork Concept n The International Standard for Geographic Metadata - ISO19115 n OpenGIS Consortium standards (dynamic internet map services, catalogue services etcetera)

The GeoNetwork Concept – –ISO/DIS n n This new international standard defines the schema required for describing geographic information and services. It provides information about: – identification; – extent; – quality; – spatial; – temporal schema; – spatial reference; – distribution…of digital geographic data.

The GeoNetwork Concept – –OpenGIS n n GeoNetwork uses Open GIS Consortium (OGC) compliant map services for dynamic mapping. The OGC is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the development of open geoprocessing systems and standards.

The GeoNetwork Concept – –Implementing common standards. n n Standards for: » Describing data; » Finding data; » Combining data

Metadata Catalog Dynamic Map Server ASIACOVER GeoNetwork portal data Metadata Catalog Dynamic Map Server FAO GeoNetwork portal data Metadata Catalog Dynamic Map server UNEP.net portal data Integrated Portals WFP VAM

Functionality n Searching of individual spatial data layers in distributed databases (through the Z39.50 protocol) n Finding information related to these data layers

Functionality n Access dynamic Internet Map Services n Uploading and downloading of spatial data

Metadata Catalog Dynamic Map Server ASIACOVER GeoNetwork portal data Metadata Catalog Dynamic Map Server FAO GeoNetwork portal data Metadata Catalog Dynamic Map server UNEP.net portal data Integrated Portals WFP VAM

Basic software requirements n An XML/XSL based web application n Platform independent (Windows, Unix, Macintosh) n Uses JDBC compliant databases n Freely available

GeoNetwork OpenSource n What is it? –A website! –You can quickly set up a metadata portal –It implements the International Standard for Geographic Metadata (ISO19115) –It allows online maintenance of metadata and data n for internal use on an intranet and/or n for publication on the internet

GeoNetwork OpenSource n This means that –Anybody in the world that wants to set up a spatial data and metadata portal can do so –No costs are involved in buying the application –Access to all the source code that was developed for the application

GeoNetwork OpenSource n This means that you –are free to modify the application –can contribute to the further development of the application –can add new features to the Open Source release of GeoNetwork –can benefit from new features developed by others

GeoNetwork OpenSource n This means that you –only have to respect the GNU Library or Lesser General Public License (LGPL)
