9-1 6 th grade math Relating Fractions, Decimals, and Percents

Objective To convert a percent to a fraction or decimal and convert a fraction or a decimal to a percent. Why? To know how to relate numbers and integers in different ways that will help you to solve problems easier.

California State Standards NS 1.2 (Gr 5): Interpret percents as part of a hundred: find decimal and percent equivalents for common fractions and explain why they represent the same value.

Vocabulary Percent – A special ratio that compares a number with 100 Percent = “each hundred” % = – 100% = all work is used (1/1 or 100/100 or 5/5, etc.)

How to Change Fractions to Decimals to Percents (and any other way) 1)To convert a fraction to a decimal... Divide 2) To convert a decimal to a percent … move the decimal 2 spaces to the right. Think of it as moving the decimal point into the % spot. 3) To convert a percent to a fraction … convert % back to a fraction and use place value. Reduce. 4) To convert a decimal to a fraction … use place value and reduce. 5) To convert a fraction to a percent … convert to a decimal then to a percent- moving the decimal two places to the right and place the % symbol. 6) To convert a percent to a decimal … move the % 2 spaces to the left and replace the % symbol with a decimal point (.) 1)¾ =.75 2).75 = 75% 3)75% = 75/100 = ¾ 4).75 = 75/100 = ¾ 5)¾ =.75 = 75%

Objective Review To convert a percent to a fraction or decimal and convert a fraction or a decimal to a percent. Why? You now know how to relate numbers and integers in different ways that will help you to solve problems easier. Both a fraction and decimal can be written as a percent, and a percent can be written as a decimal or as a fraction.

Independent Practice Complete problems Copy original problem first. Show all work! If time, complete Mixed Review: If still more time, work on Accelerated Math.
