Intro to Evergreen Indiana Project launched in December 2007 – Goal is Resource Sharing Hardware, software, patron and MARC records Executive Committee elected August 2008 – Consortium parameters set Lending periods and limits Fines and fees One library card First library went live: August 2008

Evergreen Indiana at libraries (100 public libraries) across the state of Indiana. 13 non-automated libraries Current service population: 981,000 3 million bibliographic records 6.3 million items Hundreds of thousands of items transit each year Opportunity to use Unique Management, Inc. and OverDrive

Patron-driven holds!

Goals (& convenient results) Save by sharing – Currently, no membership fee. Provide more resources to library patrons – Physical materials, eContent, etc. Professional development opportunities for library staff – LEU-eligible classes – Leadership opportunities Automating non-automated libraries

Diverse range of literacy levels Library staff in the consortium have: – Different life experiences – Different abilities – Different knowledge – Come from different areas Patrons of the consortium have: – Different life experiences – Different abilities – Different knowledge – Come from different areas One commonality! 60% of EI libraries serving a population of 10,000-40,000 patrons

Digital literacy Staff receive training on using Evergreen – Basic circulation, basic cataloging (copy cataloging), holds and searching (New!), admin/reports – Powerpoints, demos, trainer scripts, attendee exercises and cheat sheets – Training server – Webinars offered bi-annually Staff train patrons on using software features

Info Literacy Find, retrieve, analyze and use information Staff are given the tools to answer questions – Training documents, policies and procedures – Listserv and webinars Translating rules into patron language Patrons learn to search strategies to find what they want – Get access to 6 million items!

Leadership!!!

Leadership skills  Staff can join a consortium committee to develop their leadership skills and effect policy.  Provides an opportunity for staff to get together on a regular basis and swap stories.  Bi-annual webinars/roundtables  Staff can take the lead on these and develop teaching skills.  Listservs and mentoring

Challenges

Managing end-user expectations – Changing from propriety ILS to Evergreen – Upgrades Updating training materials with each upgrade – Powerpoints, trainer scripts, attendee exercises, webinars, recordings, self-paced tutorials Requests for development – Running the *standard* version of Evergreen vs. local customizations

Opportunities

Expanding resource sharing opportunities – Evergreen for school and correctional facilities – Fullfillment for academia Shared collection development strategy Collaboration with members of international community on documentation, training, etc. Expanding payment program, acquisitions and serials
