Course Delivery Options

Course Delivery Comparison Traditional Meets two days a week for full semester Course material delivered mainly in classroom setting Significant amount of face- to-face contact with instructor Suitable for a wide variety of student ability Hybrid-Online Meets one day a week for full semester (some face-to-face contact with instructor) Classroom activities include tests, speeches, and lectures/activities Remaining course material presented on class webpage and VISTA Suitable for “average-good” student who has a reasonable amount of self-discipline and computer savvy

Course Delivery Comparison Online (Web-Based) All coursework completed online via course website or VISTA except for pre-arranged mandatory testing sessions Very little face-to-face contact with instructor Suitable for the “good” student who has the self-discipline and organizational skills to work independently and a solid amount of computer savvy On-campus orientation required DVD Student is issued set of DVDs to view class sessions and complete assignments on his own schedule; DVDs are accompanied by a traditional text, handouts, and online supplements Suitable for the “good” student who has the self-discipline and organizational skills to work independently On-campus orientation required; Other on-campus meetings may be required for tests, labs, etc.

Is an online or hybrid class right for me? What are the challenges? Online learning is not for everyone. Some students find it difficult to manage their time and effort without the regular face-to-face contact of the traditional classroom. Others feel that they learn better by hearing lectures than by reading. Some are unprepared for the amount of writing required by online assignments and discussions. In addition you must have basic computer skills and a "nice" computer with Internet access.

Am I ready for an online, hybrid, or DVD class? Use the Student Online Readiness Tool (SORT) to assess your readiness, your goals, and your learning preferences. To the SORT ( (
