The following slide show addresses gambling, our youth, and the potential risks associated with it.

Oregon’s Gambling Services Program strongly encourages you to include problem gambling when discussing addiction issues with our youth. Here’s why... Spacebar to advance slide

We talk to kids about the risks associated with alcohol, drugs and sex, right?

Spacebar to advance slide We talk to kids about the risks associated with alcohol, drugs and sex, right? We sure do…

Spacebar to advance slide What about gambling?

Spacebar to advance slide What about gambling? Students today are increasingly being exposed to gambling opportunities - on the Internet, in the community, at home and even at church - so it's no surprise that problems associated with gambling are being seen in youth.

The featured data comes from the Oregon Student Wellness Survey, an anonymous and voluntary survey of 6th, 8th and 11th grade youth, conducted in the spring of Spacebar to advance slide

Spacebar to advance slide There were 52,635 surveys collected from 35 counties, representing 458 schools in 138 public school districts.

Here’s something else to consider... Spacebar to advance slide

Here’s something else to consider... Students who indicated they gambled also demonstrated higher rates of alcohol use, marijuana use, smoking, and depression. Spacebar to advance slide

Does this mean that youth who gamble also drink, smoke, use drugs, and are delinquents? Spacebar to advance slide

NO Spacebar to advance slide

It means that those kids that gamble also tend to participate in other high risk behaviors… Spacebar to advance slide

It means that youth who gamble are at higher risk for other risky behaviors… Spacebar to advance slide

… and those who use drugs, drink, smoke, and are depressed, are at higher risk to develop gambling problems. Spacebar to advance slide

It means that whenever substance use, or other risky behaviors, are discussed with our youth GAMBLING needs to be included.
