Section1.1 Overview SWBAT: STATISTICS….. What is it? Classify data sets and identify descriptive vs. inferential statistics

We convert data into information and information into knowledge. Wisdom is an individual's ability to apply knowledge or understanding in a given situation. It is the transformation of data into knowledge where statistics comes in…. Statistics is the science of collecting, organizing, and interpreting data whether it is numerical or non-numerical.

Statistics is classified into two categories: 1) DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS: -involves data collection, presentation and characterization 2) INFERENTIAL STATISTICS: -make estimates, decisions and predictions about a population EX: Data collected on delivery time of 5000 pizza orders found that the average delivery time, a characteristics of data, was 16 minutes. EX: 99.7% of deliveries will always be made on time.

Identify Descriptive vs. Inferential CIRCLE the part(s) of the study representing the descriptive statistic. Then write an inferential statistic that might be drawn from the study. A large sample of men, aged 48, was studied for 18 years. For unmarried men, approximately 70% were alive at age 65. For married men, 90% were alive at age 65. A survey conducted among 1017 men and women by Opinion Research Corporation International found that 76% of women and 60% of men had a physical exam within the previous year.

You Try…. The last four semesters an instructor taught Calculus, the following numbers of people passed the class Which of the following conclusions can be obtained from purely descriptive measures (D) and which can be obtained by inferential methods (I)? The last four semesters the instructor taught, an average of 15 people passed the class. The next time the instructor teachers, we can expect approximately 15 people to pass the class. This instructor will never pass more than 20 people in a Calculus class. The last four semesters the instructor taught, no more than 20 people passed the class. Only 4 people passed one semester because the instructor was in a bad mood the entire semester. The instructor passed 20 people the last time he taught the class to keep the administration happy. The instructor passes so few people because he doesn’t like teaching Calculus.

Let’s back up a minute and look at the two types of data sets…. 1) POPULATION and 2) SAMPLE

IMPORTANT… -CONTEXT is key when determining whether a data set is a population or a sample -The population parameter is rarely known. It is what we are to make a ________________ about. -The sample statistics are always known. We use ___________________________________

EXAMPLES… EX1:I am conducting a study to find the average height of all the seniors at NPA. I measure the heights of all students in our class. Population: Sample: Parameter: Statistic: EX2:In 2006, major league baseball teams spent a total of $2,326,706,685 on players’ salaries. Is this a population parameter or sample statistic? Justify.

The US Department of Energy conducts weekly surveys of approximately 800 gasoline stations to determine the average price per gallon of regular gasoline.
