Tourism in the UK 2 nd of 3 topics this year) You need to know: 1.A case study of EITHER a UK national park OR a coastal resort (we are going to study Blackpool a coastal resort in Lancashire) 2.Why did Blackpool grow as a tourist destination? 3.How has tourism been managed in Blackpool both in the past and for the future? Has this management been effective?

Why did Blackpool grow as a tourist destination? Look at the Butler tourist life cycle model on the double sided sheet. Make your own copy of the graph without the labels and then annotate with labels that apply to Blackpool. Using the labels on your graph up 1960 and any other ideas from the text book and sheets write 2 paragraphs outlining why Blackpool grew as a tourist resort.

How has the increase in tourism been managed and has it been managed effectively? Make a list of all the attractions that Blackpool has and split them into natural and manmade.

Your list of manmade attractions is a good starting point for how Blackpool’s tourist industry has been managed in the past. It was very successful until the 1960’s when people began to look elsewhere (often abroad) for their holidays. Blackpool did not/could not move with the times. WHY DID BLACKPOOL DECLINE AS A RESORT?

Managing Blackpool’s tourism for the future Blackpool is still a big attraction for tourists but it is declining rapidly… what can be done? Look at the single sheet on Blackpool and page 241 in your book. Make a list of the ways people have tried to manage Blackpool’s tourism. For two of them explain how effective you think it has been or might be in the future. Extension: do question 4 p.241

Homework Go to the website. Go to the ‘inspire me’ tab on the page and choose two of the options there. For each one describe in one or two paragraphs how Blackpool is trying to attract more visitors. Explain which of these two strategies you think may be more effective. Give reasons for your answer. Extra: here’s a news article about Blackpool toonews article
