Introduction Who I am – Me – As an Individual – My Past – GSK “My Apprenticeship” – My Present – Powered By Innovation “Chapter 2”

Strategic Planning - Defined “Is an organization's process of defining its strategy, or direction, and making decisions on allocating its resources to pursue this strategy. In order to determine the future direction of the organization, it is necessary to understand its current position and the possible avenues through which it can pursue particular courses of action. Generally, strategic planning deals with at least one of three key questions: – "What do we do?“ – "For whom do we do it?“ – "How do we excel?““Wikipedia” My understanding – Being able to articulate your Business internally and externally to create simple understanding – Commercialisation of goods or services – Modelling and Scenario Planning

Examples in Action Information / Analytics Strategy decision making. – CPG Consumer - Using Standard Shared Metrics to define and provide a visual representation of alignment between Company Strategy and Current performance (Visual Cockpit) Merger – GW + SB – >120 to 80 (Sites) – Manufacturing Strategy defined using scenario and modelling techniques to create optimised manufacturing centres of excellence. Inventory Optimisation – Creating a strategy for EU inventory optimisation created from analytical models and scenario planning. – Working capital released to fund acquisition's. MYT (Medway Youth Trust) – Strategy creation for young peoples services Business Strategy to align and target support workers to the most needy children / young adults. Predictive models key to identifying patterns and relationships between what appeared unrelated information sets, who and when to help Reducing the downstream support services required later in life

Key Messages Analytics needs to be embedded in business strategy formulation and in on-going iteration process. – Organisations that embrace this will understand more about their business and be more likely to grow and retain customers. – Being an informed business will likely force you to become simpler and more agile and potentially more innovative. – Setting strategic Analytics priorities should start at the top but Exec’s still need to understand how best to embrace and this is an educational process but a great investment. – The transition to becoming an “Analytically” driven organisation takes time, patience and is an education process, pragmatic small steps build confidence and develop understanding. – A lot of todays business success stories are from businesses that sole purpose is to create value from information.
