Vocabulary Pharisee:A lay group who tended to make the practice of religion a matter of following the law. This often resulted in centering on self and made the Kingdom dependent on themselves and not on God’s goodness and love.

Vocabulary Scribe:An educated person who preserved and copied important documents.

Vocabulary Sadducees:Lay members of the upper class who by New Testament times were running the affairs of the nation. They collaborated with the Greek and Roman occupiers which assured their position of power. They played a leading part in bringing about Christ’s death.

Vocabulary Sanhedrin:The title of the parliament which ran the affairs of the Jewish nation in so far as the Romans allowed it. Composed of the heads of priestly families, Scribes, and prominent lay men.
