Supports of homelessness in the U.S.

Discussion questions  Should we help homeless people? ( Do you for or against to help homeless people?)  What can we learn from America’s condition of support?

Causes ① Domestic Violence  Many people (especially women and often with children) who flee from domestic violence.  63% of homeless women have experience of domestic violence.

Causes ② Hurricanes  Problem of insurance  Over 70,000 people became homeless because of Hurricane Katrina ( ← 2005, East of the U.S.)  Hurricane Sandy (2012) – heavy flood. Expected some people will become.

Effects  Increase criminals  Economic impacts – 1. Funding costs of organizations are not only from donation but also from taxes. 2. Cleaning costs of public parks

As a result, homeless people need the places to live. → What kind of supports do they receive in the U.S.?

Support ① Churches ・ Morning supply (breakfast) ・ ”Food bank” (cans, daily product)

Support ② Shelter  There are many organizations to provide shelter to homeless people Ex) PORTLAND HOMELESS FAMILY SOLUTIONS Day shelter(8:00am~6:00pm) Night shelter(6:30pm~7:30am) For 30~60 days Also, they help families find permanent housing → 85%!!

Support ③ For Children  HORIZONS FOR HOMELESS CHILDREN The number of homeless families with children are increasing. The organization are trying to stop Homeless Children They grew up with homeless parents Adult With no any education Homeless They might have children

Support ④ The Big issue Japan  From U.K.  This is the magazine that homelessness sell.  We can buy it with 300 yen.  Sell 30/day,7~8 month

Opinions - Agree  Alcoholics, drugs ← a few people. Most of them became homelessness because of reasonable reason(like economic, natural disasters…)  They just CANNOT work  “I’m sure that they will work by our little push/support”

Opinions - disagree  They DON’T WANT TO work.  Supporting homelessness is government work  Half of people don’t give them money on the street  Just to supply products or to give money are not good for homelessness to have desire to work

Thank you!!
