-Born: January 19 th, Parents were both monarchists and devout Roman Catholics. -He was in favor of republicanism -Married in 1824 to Caroline Massin EARLY LIFE/BIOGRAPICAL INFO

-Went to University of Montpellier -In 1814 he entered Ecole Polytechnique and proved to be a brilliant mathematician and scientist. -Dropped out of school before graduating and settled in Paris with no support for himself. EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

-Comte met Henri de Saint-Simon a social theorist interested in creating a perfect society. Saint-Simon had a big influence on Comte, he became his secretary and collaborator. -He developed a social doctrine based on scientific principles -Comte’s positivism came out of his belief that human society could be studied scientifically. The theory of positivism holds that there is only real truth in scientific knowledge -The stages include: 1)Theological of Fictitious Age 2)Metaphysical or Abstract Age 3) Positive of Scientific Age -Comte stated that each succeeding stage is superior to the earlier stage RESEARCH HISTORY

-Developed two words: sociology and positivism. -Invented a new discipline which he called at first social physics and changed it to sociology there after. -His contribution to sociology can be divided into 4 categories: 1. Classification and ordering of social sciences 2. The nature, method and scope of sociology 3. The law f three stages 4. The plan for social reconstruction 5. Positivism -Law of Three Stages, states that human thought has undergone three separate states in its evolution and development CONTRIBUTIONS TO SOCIOLOGY

-Known as the father of sociology because he coined the term and held the belief hat this new, special science should combine the findings of other sciences to form more ideas about the world. HALL OF FAME

-In 1826 Comte had a nervous breakdown and he was unable to teach for 3 years. Despite periodic hospitalization over the next 15 years. - Comte died of stomach cancer in Paris on September 5, HEALTH/DEATH
