Jedi Journal (Learning Target Notes) Chapter 11: Ancient Greece Lesson 1 - The Geography of Greece Jedi Journal (Learning Target Notes)

1.) I can describe the effect of mountains on Greek life. Mountains made transportation difficult. It was hard to unite Greece under one government. Only 20 – 30% of land was good for farming. Most farmland was located in the valleys. Men were the main land owners. Landowners were part of the upper class.

2.) I can explain how the sea unified Greece and brought new ideas. The seas linked most of Greece to each other. They used the seas as transportation routes for trading and military conquests. This brought new ideas to the Greek city-states.

3.) I can summarize the beginnings of Greek culture. It evolved over 1000s of years starting around 2000 BC. The 1st Greek civilization was Mycenaean Greece. It collapsed around 1200BC. There were no written records until about 750BC. The Greeks started using the Phoenician alphabet with some changes. Our alphabet today is based on this alphabet. The Greeks also learned about coins from trading and they developed new forms of literature and government.
