Danielle King BPW Leadership Conference October 2012 The Statistics on Women in American Samoa Women on the Local Scene:

Total number of households in American Samoa is 9, % of households are headed by women. 7% of households headed by women have their children under the age of % of the women in the labor force are employed. American Samoa Households

59% of the total island population is 16 and over. 52% of the 16 and over population is in the labor force. 22% of the labor force is made up of women. 94% of the women in the labor force are employed. Women in the American Samoa Labor Force

Women are found in most divisions of ASG. There are 11 women directors out of an overall 54 positions. There are no women in Judicial or House seats. Women in American Samoa Government

Boards are appointed by the Governor. No women on the Boards for telecommunications, medical, or power authorities. Women hold CEO and CFO for the power authority. Women and Government Authority Boards

Out of then 57 village mayors in the Territory, none are women. A small number of women are involved in village policing. Women and Village Authority

Women fill approximately 35% of the Board seats in these organizations. The number of women will fluctuate annually base on the Board elections. Women and NGOs

Women show a strong presence in our labor force. Women play a strong role in government operations. Women need to increase their numbers in our government decision-making bodies. More data is needed to mark women’s roles in village authority. More data needed for women’s roles in the private sector. The 2010 Census data will show us where women are now (US government is still producing the data). What does all of this mean?
