Proportions and Ratio Word Problems Lesson 34
Objectives Form proportions in terms of equivalent fractions. Determine whether relationships are proportional by testing value pairs for a constant ratio. Find missing numbers in a proportion by finding a multiple between the terms of the proportion. Use a ratio table to form and solve a proportion from a word problem.
Proportion Tells us that two ratios are equal. Remember that a ratio is a comparison of two numbers by division. You can check to see if two ratios are equal by reducing each ratio.
Equivalent Fractions We can use cross multiplication (fish hook) to solve for missing parts. – 3/9 = 15/r – x/10 = 16/40 – 6/12 = 3/x – Two pounds of apples cost $3. How much do 6 pounds cost?
