The mission The British Universities Film & Video Council (BUFVC) promotes the production, study and use of moving image, sound and related media within post-compulsory education and research. Supporting learning, teaching and research with moving image and sound. Connecting you with the content you need.

BUFVC - who we are Founded in 1948 – 60 years of accumulated knowledge Established by academic staff to exchange knowledge and information Represents and serves the interests of 286 subscribing members, 216 of which are HE/FE sector establishments Limited company with charity status Democratically elected trustees from 12 member institutions

BUFVC - what we do BUFVC Information Service Enquiries, Publications, Databases (AV titles, websites, film collections, books) TV & Radio Television & Radio Listings database and Off-Air Recording Back-Up Service News on Screen Largest newsreels/newsfilm database, supporting documents, Newsfilm Online Research International database of Shakespeare, newsreels, cinemagazines, David Lean etc. Training and Events Courses, conferences, screenings, workshops Copyright, Consultancy, Advice

BUFVC highlights Selected, negotiated rights, encoded and catalogued a significant share of moving image & sound content delivered by JISC through EDINA. Released 3,000 hours from LBC archive and 2 other radio collections (bufvc.ac.uk) Television and Radio Index for Learning and Teaching (TRILT) - 32,000 users from 216 HE/FE establishments million records added each year - more than 12 million so far with 60,000 records enhanced by BUFVC staff Records and retains more than 55,000 hours of television and 14,000 hours of radio per year. A decade of UK television now stored. Service started in Since 2007 over 50 one-day courses and two conferences. Produces a quarterly magazine - Viewfinder - and occasional books.

BUFVC as a Research Partner Digital Outputs Will assist in creating a digital output. Expertise in time-based media, archiving, metadata, digitisation (text, audio and video) Technical Appendix for Grant Applications BUFVC has a proved track record in assisting research partners with the technical considerations for grant Build Impact Beyond the project life BUFVC develops digital outputs and resources that outlive the project thus increasing impact and widening the audience Research record International database of Shakespeare, newsreels database, cinemagazines, David Lean, Film and the Historian, Channel 4 press pack digitisation, Federated Search and Database Enhancement for Impact etc. (Royal Holloway, Portsmouth, Leicester, King’s College, OU, etc.)

Off-Air Recording Giving access to hundreds of thousands of hours of recorded television and radio Making it easy to find broadcast information and programmes Have recorded and kept 10 channels for 10 years (moderated service for access to DVD copies) Enabling access under licence and exception on behalf of educational establishments

Online off-air recording shared service for all staff & students Record television & radio Archive indefinitely* 7 days ahead or behind services managed centrally - no equipment purchase Share create clips, share playlists & programmes, tag, comment, rate BoB National - the basics
