Solving Linear Equation Word problems

Warm - Up Write the verbal phrase as an algebraic expression or equation. Solve if applicable. Seven squared increased by a number. The difference of four times a number and seven is nine. Twenty-five is the quotient of a number and 3.5.

Example 5a Word Problems Joan bought a soft drink for four dollars and nine candy bars. She spent a total of forty-nine dollars. How much did each candy bar cost?

Example 5b Word Problems Oceanside Bike Rental Shop charges an 18- dollar fixed fee plus 7 dollars an hour for renting a bike. Jason paid 74 dollars to rent a bike. How many hours did he pay to have the bike checked out ?

Consecutive Number Problems If the numbers are consecutive, use: 1st number = 𝑥 2nd number = 𝑥 + 1 3rd number = 𝑥 + 2 etc.

Consecutive Number Problems If the numbers are consecutive ODD/EVEN, use: 1st number = x 2nd number = x + 2 3rd number = x + 4 etc.

Example 1 The sum of 3 consecutive even numbers add up to 1002. Find the three numbers. 1st= 332 2nd= 334 3rd= 336

Example 2 The sum of 4 consecutive numbers add up to 4810. Find the four numbers. 1st= 1201 2nd= 1202 3rd= 1203 4th= 1204

Example 3 You and 3 friends divide the proceeds of a garage sale equally. The garage sale earned $412. How much money did each of you receive? $103 each
