1.4: Multimedia Presentation of Changing Lifestyles in the Roaring 20s The 1920s was one of the most raucous, boisterous decades in U.S. History. Despite the economic & political strife that marked the early twenties, by 1923 a new prosperity allowed Americans to enjoy luxuries unknown during wartime, & to embrace new forms of entertainment, such as radio, sports, jazz music, movies. For much of the decade, American society resembled a boiling kettle, fairly bursting with the wailing sounds of jazz, wildly dancing feet, the roar of thousands cheering on sports heroes like Babe Ruth, and conversations laced with such slang as “banana oil,” “struggle buggy,” “sheik,” and “sheba.”

New forms of transportation such as the automobile & the airplane changed dating habits, mail service, & personal mobility. Women, who had obtained the right to vote in 1920, celebrated new freedoms in the workplace as well as their social life, reflected in part by less restrictive clothing. Government attempts to regulate drinking through Prohibition laws spawned countless illegal bars & organized crime rackets. Sports took prominence in American society as a new brand of enthusiasts elevated sports heroes to Olympian magnitude.

1.4: Multimedia Presentation of Changing Lifestyles in the Roaring 20s With more money to spend, Americans bought everything from vacuum cleaners to Listerine, & radios became a household necessity. “Talking” movies replaced silent films, & Americans flocked to see their favorite movie stars. The decade also witnessed the flowering of African-American culture centered in Harlem - the Harlem Renaissance - that influenced American culture & music for decades to come.

1.4: Multimedia Presentation of Changing Lifestyles in the Roaring 20s Each group will become an”expert” on one key social change You will be responsible for helping the rest of class understand the change. 5-7 minute multimedia presentation, power point, posters, graphs, music, slides, facsimiles of cultural artifacts, & short dramatic re- creations.

1.4: Multimedia Presentation of Changing Lifestyles in the Roaring 20s Step 1: Review your role Planning coordinator - Learns about the social change by carefully reading Student Handout 1.4A and examining Student Handout 1.4B. Leads process for planning MM presentations. Records transparency order & writes presentation notes for each transparency on Student Handout 1.4C. Help create visuals & props. Writes & presents a brief introduction for the presentation. Researcher - Leads the group in reading the information on Student Handout 1.4B, & discussing the social change. Highlights key ideas on Student Handout 1.4A. Acquires additional information about the social change from textbooks, the library or the teacher. Write a brief narration for the first transparency. Helps plan the MM presentation. Help create visuals & props. Leads presentation of the first transparency.

1.4: Multimedia Presentation of Changing Lifestyles in the Roaring 20s Step 1: Review your role cont’d. Narration Manager - Learns about the social change by carefully reading Student Handout 1.4A and examining Student Handout 1.4B. Helps plan the MM presentation. Leads the process for writing the narration of the presentation. Writes brief narration of 2nd transparency. Helps create &/or gather props & visuals. Leads presentation of the 2nd transparency. Artistic Designer - Learns about the social change by carefully reading Student Handout 1.4A and examining Student Handout 1.4B. Helps plan the MM presentation. Writes brief narration of 3rd transparency. Lists & gathers MM components, including music &/or sound effects, & oversees creation of visuals for the presentation. Leads presentation of 3rd transparency. Director - Learns about the social change by carefully reading Student Handout 1.4A and examining Student Handout 1.4B. Helps plan the MM presentation. Writes brief narration of 4th transparency. Help create visuals & props. Leads rehearsal process. Leads presentation of the 4th transparency.

1.4: Multimedia Presentation of Changing Lifestyles in the Roaring 20s Step 2: Learn about your social change. Carefully read & discuss the information on Student Handout 1.4A & examine the pictures on Student Handout 1.4B. As you read the information, the Researcher should highlight key ideas about your social change Step 3: Plan your MM presentation. You must create a 5-7 minute MM presentation that educates viewers on the historical significance of your social change. Use Student handout 1.4C to plan your presentation. As you do so, the Planning Coordinator should make sure the presentation plan includes: the order in which you will present your transparencies. The main points that will will be included in the narration to accompany each transparency. At least 3 types of media, such as graphs, music, sound effects, video, posters, facsimiles of cultural artifacts, dramatic re-creations, reading of literature or poetry, or demonstrations.

1.4: Multimedia Presentation of Changing Lifestyles in the Roaring 20s Step 4: Write the introduction & narration of your presentation. Your group must write a brief introduction & narration for each transparency in your MM presentation. You will work together to develop the ideas for the introduction & narration, but each group member must write the text for one part of the presentation. The Narration Manager should make sure the introduction & 4 brief narrations are written & that the information is clear & lively. Step 5: Prepare materials for your presentation. Your MM presentation must include multimedia components. You must create or gather MM components & visuals. As you prepare for your presentation, the Artistic Designer should make sure the group creates clear, aesthetically pleasing visuals, & that the MM components are effectively incorporated into the presentation. Step 6: Rehearse your presentation. Make sure all group members clearly understand their responsibilities for the presentation, & that the presentation can be presented in the allotted time of 5-7 minutes. As you rehearse your MM presentation, the Director should make sure: the presentation flows smoothly, the MM components are used effectively the lines are spoken clearly, at an appropriate volume, & with dramatic emphasis.
