The Importance of Language Children need to understand a wide variety of words that relate to Addition and subtraction that will support them in answering the following: Word problems Mental maths Real life problems and experiences.

What to look for  Number bonds Children need to have secure knowledge of number bonds especially number bonds to 10! This will support their familiarity of number bonds to 20 and = =  Doubles

What to look for  Larger number on top  Carry overs at the top

Inverse Operations Addition and subtraction are inverse operations of each other. Children should use the opposite operation to check their answer is correct. e.g = =45
