Reading Quiz Chs How did Holden know Stradlater’s date, Jane Gallagher? 2. What did Holden write a composition about? 3. What did Holden do with the composition? 4. Why? 5. Why did Stradlater punch Holden?

English III  EQ: How do Salinger’s choices about structure, narration, and character impact the theme of The Catcher in the Rye?  Agenda  Bell Ringer – Reading Quiz #1  Agenda/EQ  Mrs. Hockenberry’s Blog  Class Summary  “Phony” Journal Entry  Brainstorming  Free Writing  Homework: Chapters 4-6

“Phony” Journal entry  Identify some of the things about your own society that you think are “phony.”  Fake, insincere, dishonest, hypocritical  Holden often applies this word to people who try too hard to fit in or people who try too hard to pose as a member of a certain group.  Make a list with a partner  Don’t worry about writing a response yet, just try to come up with potential ideas.

“Phony” Journal Entry  Identify some of the things about your own society that you think are “phony.”  Use stories from your own life to support your ideas.  Use your own voice – informal, personal tone.  Pay attention to grammar and punctuation – they are there for a reason.  When you talk about a new topic, form a new paragraph.  Remember that your writing still has to be school appropriate.  At least 1 page (hand written in your journal)

Holden’s Voice  First Person  Narrative  Confessional  Stream of Consciousness  Dialogue  Flashbacks  Colloquial Language (keep it appropriate)

Bell Ringer 9-12  Get out your Homework (3 written jokes)  Get with a partner  Read your jokes  Make suggestions for revision (if you have any)  Pay special attention to individual words – are they the best words to use?

 EQ: How should comedic sketches be structured and formatted?  Agenda  Bell Ringer/Discussion – Revising Jokes  Agenda/EQ  Sharing Our Jokes  Sketch #1 – Mrs. Hockenberry’s Rules Creative Writing

Sketch #1 – The Rules  Groups of 2 and 3  Chose a rule and create a conflict  Sum up the Premise and 1 or 2 sentences.  Add some complications  Add a road block (or some road blocks) to your characters goals  Create a resolution  How will it end?  You need a natural (but not predictable) ending.  You need: a rule, a conflict, a premise, complications, and a resolution

Homework  Write sketch #1  Use the outline you create with your partner  You will each write your own version of the skit  Add at least 1 joke (shoot for 2)  Keep it short  Tomorrow we will format them (or at least learn how)
