Presentation transcript:

 Learning Goal: I can define the term ecological footprint; I can identify the size of my ecological footprint; I can identify the components that make up my ecological footprint

 Ecological Footprint Defined Ecological Footprint Defined

Quote: “Live simply so others may simply live.” - Gandhi An ecological footprint is used to calculate the amount of land and water needed to supply people with resources and to absorb our wastes.

 On average, Canadians need ~7 hectares per person, to keep up with our demand for resources and to handle the garbage we produce.

 Poorer countries like India and Ethiopia have a smaller E.F. compared to wealthier countries, which means that they are putting less stress on the planet but they also live without a lot of the necessities for life. This means we are not living equally well around the world. Fair Share: is how much land a person is entitled to if the land was shared equally

My Ecological Footprint is _____________ ha 1 ha is equal to an area that covers 2 football fields. My Ecological Footprint covers an area equivalent to _______________ football fields.

What does your ecological footprint indicate about your personal impact on the sustainability of Canada’s natural resources? How can we balance our individual needs and wants against the need for sustainable resource use? How might a company’s environmental record influence a consumer’s decision about buying their products?
