 THERE ARE ALL KINDS OF EMERGENCIES OUT THERE THAT WE CAN PREPARE FOR. TAKE A ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE FOR EXAMPLE. YOU MAY LAUGH NOW, BUT WHEN IT HAPPENS YOU’LL BE HAPPY YOU JOINED US, AND HEY, MAYBE YOU’LL EVEN LEARN A THING OR TWO ABOUT HOW TO PREPARE FOR A REAL EMERGENCY.

A recent national poll by Adelphi University Center for Health Innovation surveyed 1,000 Americans about their personal preparedness behaviors and the results show that we’re not ready:  More than half of Americans have not prepared copies of crucial documents  48% of Americans lack emergency supplies for use in the event of a disaster

 42% of cell phone owners do not know all their immediate family members phone numbers  More than half of parents do not have a designated meeting place in case of a disaster

 "If you are equipped to deal with a zombie apocalypse you will be prepared for a hurricane, pandemic, earthquake, or terrorist attack.“  So, we are going to ◦ make a kit ◦ make a plan ◦ and be prepared!

 Starting in November, we spend some time during each meeting discussing what is needed in our “disaster kit”  HOSA members can build kit at home and submit them for competition (Feb 2013)– winner will receive cash prize

 Poster contest - Design and create a poster illustrating ways to be prepared for emergencies. Examples of preparedness tips include: assembling a kit, creating a family plan, knowing evacuation routes, and knowing where to get information. Winners can be based on originality, amount of information, and impact.  Posters must be presented at meeting in November  Winner will be selected by panel of teachers
