Submission doc.: IEEE 11-14/0070r0 Jan 2014 Josiam et.al., SamsungSlide 2 Abstract This presentation details step-by-step procedure for a system level simulation based on both MAC and PHY features of

Submission doc.: IEEE 11-14/0070r0Jan 2014 Josiam et.al., SamsungSlide 3 Joint MAC/PHY Simulation Procedure The network topology for the simulation is defined by the simulation scenario of interest. –5 simulation scenarios are outlined in the simulation scenarios document [1] –Scenario 1: Residential –Scenario 2: Enterprise –Scenario 3: Indoor Small BSS Hotspot –Scenario 4: Outdoor Large BSS Hotspot –Scenario 4a: Outdoor Large BSS Hotspot + Residential

Submission doc.: IEEE 11-14/0070r0 Joint MAC/PHY Simulation Procedure 1.The System is modeled as a network of APs placed at locations in the network. For scenarios 2, 3, 4 – the AP location is fixed while for scenario 1 – this is a random variable 2.STAs are dropped independently throughout the network until the desired fixed number of STAs is achieved everywhere. Each STA corresponds to an active user session that runs for the duration of the drop. In case a specific traffic mix is required, STAs are dropped according to the specific traffic mix specified in the simulation scenario document For scenario 2, the STA locations are fixed while for all other scenarios, the locations are random Slide 4Josiam et.al., Samsung Jan 2014

Submission doc.: IEEE 11-14/0070r0 Joint MAC/PHY Simulation Procedure 3.STAs are randomly assigned channel models. Depending on the simulation, these may be in support of a desired channel model mix, or separate statistical realizations of a single type of channel model. The channel model mix to be used is specified per simulation scenario in [1]. 4.The AP with best path to STA, taking into account slow fading characteristics (path loss, shadowing and antenna gains) is chosen as the serving AP. Some scenarios require different association rules that shall be applied when simulating them. The exact association rules are defined for each scenarios in the Simulation Scenarios document [1]. Slide 5Josiam et.al., Samsung Jan 2014

Submission doc.: IEEE 11-14/0070r0 Joint MAC/PHY Simulation Procedure 5.The location of each STA remains unchanged during a drop, and the speed of the STA is only used to determine the Doppler effect of fast fading. Additionally, the STA is assumed to remain attached to the same AP for the duration of the drop. Slide 6Josiam et.al., Samsung Jan 2014

Submission doc.: IEEE 11-14/0070r0 Joint MAC/PHY Simulation Procedure 7.Packets are not blocked when they arrive into the system (i.e., queue depths are infinite). STAs with a required traffic class shall be modeled according to the traffic models described in Simulation Scenarios document. Start times for each traffic type for each STA should be randomized as specified in the traffic model being simulated. 8.Packet aggregation rules as specified in each simulation scenario are to be applied before transmission. Slide 7Josiam et.al., Samsung Jan 2014

Submission doc.: IEEE 11-14/0070r0 Joint MAC/PHY Simulation Procedure 9.Packets are transmitted when the STA gains access to the channel. Channel Quality feedback delay, PPDU errors are modeled and packets are re-transmitted as necessary. For the purpose of channel access, AP is treated as another STA. Priorities among different traffic types are to be inbuilt in the CSMA mechanism used for determining channel access at each STA/AP. The MAC state machine of each AP/STA is maintained and updated for the simulation duration to mimic CSMA STA/AP can be in any of the following states: waiting for channel, counting down timer, setting NAV, transmitting RTS, transmitting data etc. Fading signal and fading interference are computed from those STA and Aps that are transmitting at the same time as the transmission between an AP and STA. Slide 8Josiam et.al., Samsung Jan 2014

Submission doc.: IEEE 11-14/0070r0 Joint MAC/PHY Simulation Procedure 10.Simulation time is chosen to ensure convergence in user performance metrics. For a given drop, the simulation is run for this duration and then the process is repeated with the STAs dropped at new random locations. A sufficient number of drops are simulated to ensure convergence in the system performance metrics. 11.Performance statistics are collected for STAs and APs in the network 12.All the APs and STAs shall be dynamically simulated.
