Rock Climbing At the SLC

The Wall 52 feet tall Tallest free-standing climbing structure in Texas Offers bouldering, top rope, and lead climbing Instructional courses from beginner to advanced Looks like it’s doing a “sic’em” Has at least a dozen top rope climbs

Equipment All equipment including shoes, harnesses, lead ropes, and carabineers are available for checkout at the ROCK for no additional cost.

Harness The harness is worn by the climber and attaches to a rope held by the belayer.

Climbing Shoes Special shoes that are light weight, with a rubber bottom to improve grip on hand-holds.

Rope Connects the climbers harness to the belayer and will keep the climber from falling to the ground if he/she slips.

Carabiner Connects rope and harness. Extremely strong. More than strong enough to support a persons weight.

Hand-Holds Hand-holds are the grips that stick out of the wall so that the climber can pull himself/herself up with their arms, and push up with their legs.

Hand-holds vary in size and shape Hand-holds vary in size and shape. There are larger ones that are easier to grip for beginners routes and smaller ones for more advanced climbing routes.

The hand-holds at the SLC are moved around to create new routes almost every week

Routes There is a certain color of tape placed under each hand-hold to indicate which hand-holds are in your route. The difficulty of routes are labeled below the starting rock.

Difficulty The SLC has routes varying from 5’6 to 5’11. 5’6 are for beginners and 5’11 for advanced climbers. As the second number increases, the difficulty grows.

Belaying To secure (a person) by attaching to one end of a rope. To belay someone, you must be trained and certified. The SLC offers classes to train students to be certified belayers.

Lead Climbing • A form of climbing in which the climber places anchors and attaches the belay rope as they climb. • Least common climbing method.

Anchors A fail-safe attachment point for protection. It’s generally a Carabiner attached to the wall at various points on the wall, and climber attaches the belay rope to them as he/she climbs.

Top Rope Climbing • To belay from a fixed anchor point at the top of the rock wall (no anchors). • Most common climbing method.

Bouldering Rock climbing without a harness. A harness is not needed because when you boulder, you don’t climb as high and wont get hurt if you fall. Should have mats and spotters to make sure you don’t hurt yourself if you fall.
