Affordable Healthcare Act (ACA) By Suzan, Scott, and Pat

Where did we begin? 1850 The Franklin Health Assurance Company of Massachusetts begins providing accident insurance 1913 American College of Surgeons was founded 1929 Justin Ford Kimball develops the Baylor Plan 1940s-1950s Bring on the employee benefit plans and expansion of the included health insurance packages! 1965 Introduction of Medicare and Medicaid 2012 US Census Bureau reports that 32 million Americans are uninsured -- 40% of those are yr. olds 2013 Affordable Healthcare Act is a go!

What is the Affordable Care Act? COVERAGE Ends Pre-Existing Condition Exclusions for Children Keeps Young Adults Covered Ends Arbitrary Withdrawals of Insurance Coverage-- Guarantees Your Right to Appeal

What is the Affordable Care Act? Costs Ends Lifetime Limits on Coverage Reviews Premium Increases Helps You Get the Most from Your Premium Dollars Care Covers Preventive Care at No Cost to You Protects Your Choice of Doctors Removes Insurance Company Barriers to Emergency Services

What is the Affordable Care Act? CARE Covers Preventive Care at No Cost to You Protects Your Choice of Doctors Removes Insurance Company Barriers to Emergency Services

Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act Roots 1989 Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act 1993 President Clinton Healthcare reform bill lead to SCHIP 1993 Health Equity and Access Reform Act 2006 “Romney Care” 2007 Healthy Americans Act 2008 Obama Campaign 45million uninsured

Compromise, Reassurances, and Controversy Obama proposed subsidy but not Mandate House of Representatives pass leading to political maneuvering in Senate Executive order “Hyde Amendment” Cornhusker Kickback Republicans claim Individual Mandate unconstitutional Vow to filibuster any bill they do not support Attempted repeal 33 times Leads to resistance and eventual government shut down

Before the Affordable Care Act In 2012, Americans paid 2 trillion in insurance premiums Hospital bills # 1 cause of Bankruptcy (most had insurance) Insurance companies denied pre-existing conditions 45 million people uninsured

After the Affordable Care Act Children can’t be denied health coverage No cap on lifetime benefits Young adults can stay on their parents’ plan up to age 26 No cap on lifetime benefits Low income families can get affordable insurance

What does the Future hold for the Affordable Care Act? Affordable for some, but now not for others What kinks need to be worked out Annual fines for those not signed up (deducted straight from ones taxes) Are the plans truly what they promote From the 45 million that were uninsured, only 1 million so far have signed up for coverage

How is the Affordable Care Act Affecting us? Suzan Bartee… Young adults – What frames how much we value healthcare? The employer’s responsibility? An interesting perspective

Scott’s Perspective Where is this 2 trillion going now? I want to believe this is a positive direction, but have little faith in our system People should have a right to affordable healthcare People shouldn’t be forced into something Healthcare is/was out of control

Pat’s Perspective Regulated, safer market is better than a market driven solely by profit Much like social security, the participation of the masses (especially low risk youth) will make this work

The End…. Sign up by March 31, 2014 or it will be the end for you!!!
