Vocabulary Cards  Well-researched approach to word learning  Helps students make connections  Helps with understanding of word meaning and key concepts Perie & Moran (2005)

Biology Vocabulary  Cytokinesis  This word can be separated as follows: Cyto - kinesis.  Cyto - means cell, kinesis - means movement.  Cytokinesis refers to the movement of the cytoplasm that produces distinct daughter cells during cell division.

Biology Vocabulary  Oligosaccharide  This word can be separated as follows: Oligo - saccharide.  Oligo - means few or little, saccharide - means sugar.  An oligosaccharide is a carbohydrate that contains a small number of component sugars.

Frayer Model  A vocabulary card that provides students an opportunity to create graphic representation of a word.  It’s a newer twist on the traditional vocabulary literacy strategy. Perie & Moran (2005)

Key Steps of the Frayer Model  Place targeted word in model  Ask students to identify a definition  Have students list characteristics  Have students list several examples  Students may create an illustration Perie & Moran (2005)

Frayer Model Definition IllustrationExamples Characteristics Word

Frayer Model An organelle found in most cells where biochemical processes of respiration and energy production occur Powerhouse Power plant Windmill Mitochondria Double membrane with its own mitochondrial DNA.
