Balboa was born Balboa was born in Jerez de los Caballeros Spain. The year he was born was in 1475.

1 st Voyage 1509 was the first Spanish expedition to colonize the mainland of South America not Hispania. He accomplished this feat after an arduous trek through the jungles of what is now Panama.

Pigs galore The Spanish expedition was to explore the Northern coast of what you call Columbia but they did not have enough men or food there. Balboa returned to the island of Hispania (Cuba) and had to settle for raising pigs for a living there.

3 rd Voyage Sailors returning from these voyages told stories about opportunity for wealth and fame attracted Balboa. In 1501 at age 26 he joined a Spanish expedition to South America.

Gold rush When Balboa and his men reached the Pacific Ocean they found gold and pearls. Balboa decided to send all of the gold and pearls to the king of Spain.

Balboa as a boy! Balboa’ s farther was not wealthy so Vasco had to work for a rich Nobel man. Balboa worked at Port City of Mangalore. Port City is located at the Atlantic coast of South West Spain.

Who really Discovered the ocean! In 1511, the Indians told Balboa of the sea on the other side of the Isthmus of Panama. Balboa tried to join the expedition but because he was deeply in debt the men who he owed money to prevented him from leaving.

4 th Voyage September 13, Balboa was the first person to see and stand on the Eastern shore of the Pacific Ocean. He claimed all his shores and the Pacific Ocean for Spain.

5 th Voyage After the king found out about Balboa’s discovery of the Pacific Ocean he appointed Balboa to serve under Deville as governer of Panama. It was the Portuguese explorer,Magellan not Balboa who discovered the Pacific Ocean.

Balboa’s death 1518 Governor Davila Accused Balboa of Treason, had him arrested and sentenced Balboa to death, but he survived. One year later Balboa and four friends were put to death.

Questions of Balboa Who really discovered the Pacific Ocean? Who told Balboa about the Pacific Ocean? Who appointed Balboa to serve under Davila as governor of Panama? What did Balboa claim all his shores and the Pacific Ocean?

Answers to question Magellan really discovered the Pacific Ocean. Indians told Balboa of Pacific Ocean. The King told Balboa to serve as governor of Panama. He claimed all his shores and the Pacific Ocean for Spain.
