Measuring Metric Length and Distance By Moira Whitehouse PhD, *Edited by Janet Hooks – Syms Middle School

Some of the tools used to measure length and distance are a metric ruler, a meter stick and a metric tape measure. Write the NAMES of each measuring tool in your notebook!

From SMALLEST to LARGEST, the METRIC units used to measure length & distance are: -millimeter (mm) --tiny things (eyelashes, ants) -centimeter (cm) –small things (pencil, bike, person) -meter (m) -- large things (rooms, buses, buildings) -kilometer (Km) -- HUGE distances (like miles, but not) Wagner T. Cassimiro "Aranha"' Write the abbreviations for each unit in your notebook!

It is important to know that: -10 millimeters (mm) = 1 centimeter (cm) -100 centimeters (cm) = 1 meter (m) *Every meter stick has 100 cm! -1,000 meters (m) = 1 Kilometer (Km) *So, 1,000 meter sticks would add up to 1 Kilometer!

Watch the video to learn HOW TO CHANGE MILLIMETERS TO CENTIMETERS… OR CENTIMETERS TO MILLIMETERS! -- JUST MOVE THE DECIMAL!

18 mm1.8 cm We will start by measuring distance, first by finding the correct millimeter and then stating the answer in centimeters for “A” through “G”. First, “A”. Stated as centimeters

What is the length of this tooth pick? In millimeters? _____ In centimeters? ______

What is the length of this paper clip in millimeters? Stated in centimeters?

Now, go to the class website, and practice your new knowledge of centimeters and millimeters by working on the activities at the top of the Science Links page.
