Race to the Top Four Core Education Reform Areas:  Standards and assessments  Effective teachers and principals  Data systems  Turnaround low-performing schools

Standards and Assessments The AVID College Readiness System is designed to increase the number of students who enroll in four- year colleges and succeed in postsecondary education and training. For 30 years, this simple formula has worked: Raise expectations of students and, with the AVID support system in place, they will rise to the challenge.

To help all students do rigorous work and meet or exceed high standards in each content area, the AVID system helps students: Develop as readers and writers Develop deep content knowledge Know content specific strategies for reading, writing, thinking and talking Develop habits, skills, and behaviors to use knowledge and skills Standards and Assessments

AVID Curriculum includes:  Writing Curriculum  College and Careers  Strategies for Success AVID Tutorials Include:  Collaborative Study Groups  Writing Groups  Socratic Seminars A Sample Week in AVID Elective

The AVID System provides:  Intense professional development  On a national, regional and local level  Rigorous, sequential curriculum materials  In content areas, in AVID strategies and in targeted initiatives such as ELL  Proven instructional methodologies  WICR – Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Reading Effective teachers and principals

The AVID program builds strong intentional leadership with well-trained staff  AVID Summer Institute, a weeklong intensive training event attended by teams from each school  School site-based training sessions focused on using AVID Path series curriculum in content area courses  Web-based seminars and online training courses on AVID principles and implementation Consistent *Supportive*On-going Training & Coaching

Effective teachers and principals The AVID program builds strong intentional leadership with a strong, multi-disciplinary site team:  Monthly site team meetings to reinforce the AVID training and develop the team’s leadership capacities.  Communities of practice among their teachers, who work together to plan instructional and academic support activities for their students.  AVID Site Visits to each school – Fall & Spring

Data Systems  AVID Data Collection uses a web-based system to collect data from school sites.  With the AVID System, data is used for program planning, documenting program success, and outreach.  AVID’s 11 Essentials form the core of program success.

Data Systems: AVID Essentials Essential # 1-3: Set-up of the Program 1. Selection of Students 2. Selection of Staff (Teachers, Counselor, Administrator) 3. Scheduling of the AVID class during school day Essential # 4-8: Delivery of the Program 4. Access Rigorous Curriculum 5. Writing/Reading Strategies 6. Inquiry Strategies 7. Collaboration Strategies 8. Tutorials/Tutors Essential # 9-11: Support for the Program 9. DATA System and Monitoring Students’ Progress 10. Resources 11. Interdisciplinary Site Team Design for success and continued improvement!

Data Systems AVID Data Collection & Analysis affords four data submission opportunities for client districts in support of program evaluation  General Site data collection  Senior data collection  The Initial Self-Study (ISS)  Certification Self-Study (CSS)

Turning around low-achieving schools “ Schoolwide” AVID ensures college readiness for all students.  A school site that has implemented AVID schoolwide has:  vision and leadership of administration;  staff that is well trained in AVID methodologies; and  a strong, multi-disciplinary site team,  with parent and student participation.  A strong AVID program transforms the leadership, structure, instruction, and culture of a school.
