Answers to exercise 2 REFERENCE: Steps to exam success, p.31 1.The problem was that it was difficult to say what was reasonable and what was not. 2. Some parents shout at or humiliate their child instead of smacking, but anti-smackers say that a better alternative to corporal punishment is a punishment which fits the crime.

Answers to exercise 4 REFERENCE: Steps to exam success, p Under the 2004 law, parents may smack their children provided that they do not hurt their child mentally or physically. 2. Since 1998, it has been illegal for teachers to use corporal punishment in schools.

5. Summarize the text using your own words. (Model summary) Since 2004, it has been legal for British parents to use corporal punishment to discipline their children. However, people against smacking are asking for more protection of the rights of children, claiming that violence makes children more aggressive. Whereas some parents have difficulties in finding other types of punishment, anti-smackers think that the punishment should fit the crime.
