CABOT COLUMBUS CORTES CARTIER HUDSON DE LA SALLE PONCE DE LEON EXPLORERS CABOT COLUMBUS CORTES CARTIER HUDSON DE LA SALLE PONCE DE LEON DE CORONADO 4 Points Each: I n search of a Northwest passage to China, I sailed for both the Dutch and English and explored parts of Eastern Canada. Though I have a river, bay, and valley named after me, my crew rebelled against me and set me (and seven crew members) adrift in a small boat. Who am I? Originally from Italy, my trip to the New World was sponsored by English merchants hoping to establish a new trade route with Asia. I ended up claiming parts of Eastern Canada for England. Who am I? After exploring and conquering the island of Borinquen (later renamed Puerto Rico), I heard stories told of a mythical “fountain of youth”. While attempting to discover this fountain, I discovered what I thought to be a “flowery”-looking island, which I named Florida. Who am I? I led an expedition, funded by my wife, into North America, searching for gold. Though I returned to New Spain in disgrace, Spanish priests considered my expedition a success because I spread Christianity to many of the Native American tribes I encountered. Who am I? In 1534, the king of France sent me to the New World in hopes of discovering the Northwest Passage. I sailed along the St. Lawrence river, in present-day Canada, and made France’s first big claim in the North America. Who am I? 6) I sailed to Mexico in search of wealth and arrived at a time when the Aztecs were expecting one of their gods to return. Initially defeated by the Aztecs, I later returned and instituted a blockade around their capital city. I eventually defeated the Aztecs and claimed their land for Spain. Who am I?

7) Born in 1451, I was inspired by the stories of Marco Polo 7) Born in 1451, I was inspired by the stories of Marco Polo. I wanted to establish a western sea route to Asia, but ended up “discovering” some islands in the New World. I returned three more times and established a new trade route which is named after me. Who am I? 8) A French explorer, I sailed down the Mississippi River, naming the region I had crossed after my king. I later returned to North America and founded a colony in present-day Texas. Who am I? 9) Where was the first permanent European settlement in United States located? 10) What is the common term given to a Spanish conqueror? Short Answer (5 points each): 11) What was the major impact of the war Hernan Cortes waged with the Aztecs? 12) Many of the explorers we studied about set out looking for gold or personal wealth, yet few of them were able to achieve this goal. What could be considered the “real wealth” or success achieved by most of these explorers? 13) Why did the Spanish attack Fort Caroline? 14) Put these explorers in order by WHEN they first came to the New World (earliest to latest): Columbus, Hudson, Cartier, Cabot 15) Put these explorers in order by WHERE they explored (starting from the south and going north): Columbus, de Leon, Cabot, de La Salle 16) What were the two most common motives for explorers to wish to come to the New World (or explore parts of the new world)? 17) Name 3 different explorers and identify who sponsored their expedition. For example: Columbus – King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain (you may not use Columbus as an example).
