Ski bird Task

What is slope? Is there a different types of slope?

Positive Slope Lines that have positive slope, slant "up hill"

Negative Slope Lines that have negative slope, slant “down hill"

Zero Slope Lines that are horizontal have a zero slope

No Slope or Undefined Slope Vertical lines have no slope, or undefined slope.

Classify the slope of each of these lines as positive, negative, zero slope, or no slope… # 1 # 2 # 3 # 4

Finding The Slope of a Line

Vertical Change (UP) Horizontal Change (OVER) Rise Run Vertical Change (UP) Horizontal Change (OVER) Yes, it is usually a fraction. Yes, you simplify. Yes, it can be improper.

Instructions: Draw each diagram. Measure the rise and run. Label your diagram. Find each slope.

Roller Coaster Rise Run # 1 # 2 Measure the rise and the run of each part of the roller coaster in inches. Find the slope of each part.

Skateboarding “Pyramid” (Side View) Measure the rise and the run of each part of the pyramid in inches. Find the slope of each part. # 1 # 2 # 3

Mount Neverest (Not drawn to scale) Measure the rise and the run of each part of the mountain in centimeters. Find the slope of each part. # 1 # 2 # 3

How many points do you need to draw a line? One Two Three Quiz students

Graph (3,2) and (-1,-1) Remember to click to make each part appear

Draw a line through the points Remember to click to make each part appear

Now that we have our line let’s find its slope… Remember we are finding the following ratio: Vertical Change or Rise Horizontal Change Run

Vertical Change or the Rise 3 Discuss vertical change

Horizontal Change or the Run 4 3 Discuss horizontal change

Vertical Rise Horizontal Run 3 4 May need to remind students that a ratio is a comparison of two numbers

Day 2

Find the slope of the following line.

The slope is… 1 2

Find the slope of the line.

The slope is…. -3 Discuss why the slope is negative and that –3/1 reduces to –3.

Find the slope of these lines. Have students practice.

The slope is… Black line 3 Red Line 1 Blue Line -1/2

Find the slope of these lines

The slope is… Orange line 0 Green Line No Slope (or Undefined)

Find the slope of each of these lines… # 1 # 2 # 3 # 4
