Presentation transcript:

Presented By: Andy Balderson – Product Manager Ethernet, Internet, Wireless or Fiber - Distribute your HMI Application Over IP Networks Farther ! The Web Based HMI Revolution

Presented By: Andy Balderson – Product Manager IT Penetration on the Plant Floor Has only Just Begun! I spend a lot of time on Factory Floors and I regularly See: –Clipboards being used to record Production, Schedules and downtime. –Operators with “Cheat Sheets” attached to their work area. –Work Instructions provided on Paper printouts. –“Electronic” Data Collection systems where the information is never used.

Presented By: Andy Balderson – Product Manager Compare that to the “Office” environment In a typical office some or all of the following are used routinely: Office Productivity Suites Instant Messaging MRP / ERP Systems Accounting, etc. … and even Web Based applications …

Presented By: Andy Balderson – Product Manager Web Collaboration In the office Environment We’ve become used to: –Integrated Calendars –Resource Management –Communications (IM, , Web Forums, Groups, etc.) –Information at our Fingertips (Who hasn’t used Google?)

Presented By: Andy Balderson – Product Manager Slower Factory Floor Adoption – Why? The Vast Majority of Today’s HMI and SCADA applications are stand alone Desktop Apps … Why?

Presented By: Andy Balderson – Product Manager Factory Floor Acceptance Performance (< 1 Second Response Times) Push Vs. Polled Data Security Concerns Poor Animation Capabilities

Presented By: Andy Balderson – Product Manager Web Publishing Technologies / HTML –Hyper Text Transport Protocol. (Language is Hyper Text Markup Language) –Inherently One way protocol. –Utilizes Http “Get” command to refresh page. –Each Page has Static information –No Animation. User Requests Page HTTP “Get” Command is issued to locate content. Content Requested from Server. Server Receives Request Server Responds with Static Page.

Presented By: Andy Balderson – Product Manager Web Publishing Technologies Screen Scraping –Commonly Used approach for “Web Based” HMI’s –Essentially captures an image of the Current state of the HMI screen and sends that to the Client display. Screen Scraping –Also used in “Freeware” tools like VNC. –Is acceptable for simple information updates “Moment in Time” Data. –Does not offer “Real Time” Data Performance. Screen Scraping –Even a simple Push Button State Change Requires an entire new image be transmitted. –Technology is very bandwidth intensive. –Lacks scalability on Remote Users.

Presented By: Andy Balderson – Product Manager Web Publishing Technologies SOAP – Simple Object Access Protocol Principle Messaging technology in Microsoft’s.net Strategy Several “Web Published” HMI’s utilize SOAP. Provides more throughput than simple HTML and offers Object Oriented approach for some animation. However it is still Polling Based and is best suited to low bandwidth applications – not well suited for Real Time – 2 way Interaction.

Presented By: Andy Balderson – Product Manager Web Publishing Technologies Custom Client (Browser Plugin) –Can offer Real Time Performance –Can Offer Animated Graphics –Frees the client from HTTP/HTML limitations by running a Client application that handles local updates. –Primary Drawbacks: Usually Expensive (Charge for each Client PC) Requires Pre-Planning to implement. Client software must be purchased and installed – Can’t simply connect from a Browser.

Presented By: Andy Balderson – Product Manager Web Publishing Technologies Flash Based HMI (Browser Plug in) –Runs in any Flash Enabled Browser No Client Cost / Configuration 98.4% of all Internet connected systems already have Flash installed! –Downloads the core runtime application to the browser client … offloading the server. –Provides push data updates (Flash Remoting)– reducing the need for polling. –Restricts traffic to that data that has changed. –Provides Realtime performance. –Provides Industry leading animation capabilities. –Data Portability –Cost Control –Version Control Issues eliminated.

Presented By: Andy Balderson – Product Manager The Case for Web Published HMI

Presented By: Andy Balderson – Product Manager Where it Works Plant Wide SCADA Integration Some Studies Report that up to 80% of SCADA content already exists in Machine HMI applications. –Why Re-Create this content – push the Machine level application to the Supervisory System. –See Example.

Presented By: Andy Balderson – Product Manager Multi-HMI Machines On Machines where Multiple Displays are Required there are several Key Benefits: –Reduced Hardware and Software Costs. –Easier maintenance with a Single Application being Web published to each additional Display. Server – Has only Copy of App. All other Stations – subscribe Via A Browser

Presented By: Andy Balderson – Product Manager Where it Works OEM Machine Builders – –A Web Published HMI allows unparalleled Remote Support. See In Action.

Presented By: Andy Balderson – Product Manager Data Portability How Many of you have applications where someone in the “Office” would Like access to the Production Data ? How about a Simple Web Page … See Example.

Presented By: Andy Balderson – Product Manager Remote Applications What About a Headless Unit to put in the Cabinet - Allowing HMI Access when Operators and/or service are present. Compressor Stations, Pipelines, Utilities Transmission and scores of other Unmanned applications!
