Let’s Eat Healthy! This main concept of this text set is centered on teaching and motivating kids at a young age to eat healthy. Grade: 3 rd & 4 th TEKS (b4D) – The student is expected to explain the need for foods as a source of nutrients that provide energy for physical activity (b4C) – The student is expected to identify foods that enhance a healthy heart (b4F) – The student is expected to explain the link between physical activity/inactivity and health such as reduce stress and burn calories.

Fiction Gregory, the Terrible Eater by Mitchell Sharmat Annotation: In this book, Gregory the goat refuses to eat the staple diet his parents want him to eat of tin cans and ties. He instead chooses eggs, fruits, vegetables and orange juice. The cute and colorful illustrations and storyline give a new meaning to healthy food and junk food for a comical effect for readers. Sharmat, M. (1984). Gregory, the Terrible Eater. New York: Scholastic.

Title: Gregory, the Terrible Eater Basis of Selection: This book was cute and comical for kids to introduce healthy food choices. Obviously kids would not choose to eat tin cans and ties, but in this book they are the healthy food choice compared to fruits and vegetables. The irony in the book helps the kids see what healthy food choices are. How used: I would use this to introduce the healthy food choice material. The kids would see that even though it is silly the main character made healthy food decisions.

Non-Fiction Eat Healthy, Feel Great by William & Martha Sears Annotation : In this book kids are provided with information and the tools to make wise decisions about food choices. This book also shows how eating healthy food can be fun for both kids and parents. The book includes easy, kid- friendly recipes for kids to make with their parents at home. Kids will find this book colorful and entertaining while at the same time helping them to become healthy individuals. Sears, W. (2002). Eat Health, Feel Great. Time Warner.

Title: Eat Healthy, Feel Great Basis of Selection: This book was colorful and enticing. Of the authors, one of them was a doctor and the other a nurse, so their credentials were reliable. They had also written other books so they were relatively well known. It seemed to me that both children and adults would enjoy the book and the information inside would be educational. How used: I would use this book to read to the students to encourage them on healthy nutrition. This not only motivates them to eat healthy after they have read it, but the recipes inside can be taken home and they can cook with their parents.

Non-Fiction Good Enough to Eat by Lizzy Rockwell Annotation: This book covers all of the basics of nutrition for any individual, just in kid format so that kids can comprehend it. When kids know what they are eating they will be more excited and motivated to make healthy choices about their food. The book includes basics like where vitamins and nutrients come from and the digestion process. The book also includes several tasty, kid-friendly recipes. Rockwell, L. Good Enough to Eat: A Kid’s Guide to Food and Nutrition.

Title: Good Enough to Eat Basis of Selection: This book covered the basics of nutrition and healthy food choices for kids. I liked how in the book kids were pictured talking about nutrition and healthy food, so it seemed to the reader that the kids were talking to him or her. The book made it so that kids could relate to what was inside. How used: I would use this book with kids to cover the basic information about nutrition, healthy eating, vitamins and nutrients, etc. This is a good introduction to nutrition that kids can relate to and they can have fun taking the recipes home and cooking them with Mom or Dad.

Non-Print Resource MyPyramid for Kids Annotation: This picture shows kids what foods make up a balanced diet. Kids can see what foods, fruits, vegetables, breads, meats, etc. build up the balanced diet. The picture also incorporates physical activity into a balanced life style.

MyPyramid for Kids Basis of Selection: I think that when teaching nutrition this is a very important tool for kids to have. It doesn’t just give them the information but it creates a visual picture for them to see. They have made a kid version that is colorful and animated for kids to use as a reference and I think it is vital for kids to have it. How used: I will use this and have it posted in the room for kids to see on a regular basis. I will also give handouts of the Food Pyramid so that all of the kids can have their own copy to bring home and stick up on the fridge or do with what they please. I will cover the information on it and make sure they understand it.

Website Basis of Selection: This website provided interactive opportunities for kids to explore nutrition. The site is animated and lets kids explore and discover what it is they have been learning about. When kids can explore themselves they tend to learn more. How used: I will have this as a station for kids to use on their free time. I will also encourage the students to explore the website on their free time at home.

MyPyramid Blast Off! Game Annotation: This game offers interactive learning of the Food Pyramid for kids. Basis of Selection: I thought this was a really creative game for students to get involved in. It required them to study and use the Food Pyramid that I handed out and for them to actually understand the content while still being fun and interactive for them. How used: I will have this as a station for the students to play during free time. I will also encourage the students to play the game at home.
