THE ARCHITECT  Charles Garnier designed the Palais Garnier.  Built from

WHY WAS IT BUILT?  Designed as part of the reconstruction of Paris during the Second Empire.  This reconstruction was ordered by Emperor Napolean III.  Operas were held there.

FUN FACTS  1. Charles Garnier was hired to design and build the Palais Garnier after winning an architectural design competition.  2. Charles Garnier also designed a 7-ton bronze and crystal chandelier. During a performance, one of the counterweights fell and killed an audience member.
