THE ROTARY FOUNDATION Rotary Club of the Rockaways April 22, 2015

“DOING GOOD”

HISTORY OF THE ROTARY FOUNDATION At the 1917 convention, outgoing RI President Arch C. Klumph proposed to set up an endowment “for the purpose of doing good in the world.” In 1928, it was renamed The Rotary Foundation, and it became a distinct entity within Rotary International. $26.50

GROWTH OF THE FOUNDATION In 1929, the Foundation made its first gift of $500 to the International Society for Crippled Children. The organization, created by Rotarian Edgar F. Daddy” Allen, later grew into Easter Seals. When Rotary founder Paul Harris died in 1947, contributions began pouring in to Rotary International, and the Paul Harris Memorial Fund was created to build the Foundation.

EVOLUTION OF FOUNDATION PROGRAMS 1947: The Foundation established its first program, Fellowships for Advance Study, later known as Ambassadorial Scholarships : Three programs were launched: Group Study Exchange, Awards for Technical Training, and Grants for Activities in Keeping with the Objective of The Rotary Foundation, which was later called Matching Grants.

EVOLUTION OF FOUNDATION PROGRAMS 1978: Rotary introduced the Health, Hunger and Humanity (3H) Grants. The first 3H Grant funded a project to immunize 6 million Philippine children against polio. 1985: The PolioPlus program was launched to eradicate polio worldwide.

EVOLUTION OF FOUNDATION PROGRAMS : The first peace forums were held, leading to Rotary Peace Fellowships. 2013: New district, global, and packaged grants enable Rotarians around the world to respond to the world’s greatest needs.

ROTARY FOUNDATION PROGRAMS PolioPlus Since 1985, Rotary members have helped immunize more than 2.5 billion children against polio. Today, all but three countries are free of polio. As of June 2014, Rotary had committed more than $1.3 billion to global polio eradication to ensure that polio is eliminated in the last three countries where it remains and that it does not return elsewhere. In , program awards, including PolioPlus Partners grants, totaled $128.9 million.

Rotary Peace Centers Each year, the Foundation funds study by peace fellows at six Rotary Peace Centers, where they earn master’s degrees or professional development certificates. Since , more than 875 fellows from more than 120 countries have participated, at a cost of $49.6 million. In , there were 98 Rotary Peace Fellows from 41 countries, and program awards for the fellows and the Rotary Peace Centers totaled $5.3 million. ROTARY FOUNDATION PROGRAMS

In , the Foundation approved 488 district grants, and program awards totaled $23.5 million. Global grants - Global grants support large-scale international activities with sustainable, measurable outcomes that support Rotary’s areas of focus; activities include humanitarian projects, scholarships, and vocational training teams. In , the Foundation approved 868 global grants, and program awards totaled $47.3 million. ROTARY FOUNDATION PROGRAMS

Packaged grants - Packaged grants, which also support the areas of focus, have been carried out with the Foundation’s strategic partners. In , the Foundation approved 18 packaged grants, and program awards totaled $530,000. Note: Packaged grants were ended as of October ROTARY FOUNDATION PROGRAMS
