The last census was May 16, The next one will be in 5 years.

What is a Census?

● A count of all the people and households in Canada

We gather information about each area: ● the population ● the jobs people have ● the type of housing units they live in What is a Census?

Why does Canada do a census?

Who uses census data? Governments at all levels use it to plan services such as: ● schools ● hospitals ● libraries ● sporting facilities like hockey rinks and soccer fields ● bus routes ● police services

Who uses census data? Businesses and industries to locate: ● stores ● restaurants ● factories ● movie theatres ● telephone lines ● hydro plants

Who uses census data? Social organizations to set up: ● literacy programs ● child care centres ● soup kitchens ● transportation services for people with disabilities and countless other uses.

History of the census How long has it been around?

Ancient times ● Babylon (3800BC) ● China (3000 B.C.) ● Egypt (2200 B.C.) ● to collect taxes ● to conscript men for military service

The Romans ● The Romans were avid census takers ● Conquered lands all over Europe and Asia- reaching empire. ● Censuses helped them calculate what they owned.

The First Modern Census in Canada ● First census was in 1666 ● Jean Talon – Intendant of New France ● Enumerated 3,215 inhabitants

Starting in 1666 Collected information on: ● age ● gender ● marital status ● locality ● occupation

National Census ● In 1867, the BNA Act declared a Census necessary ● Set the number of members in the House of Commons. ● First national census 1871 ● Every 10 years

A Census Every Five Years ● In 1956, censuses every 5 years ● Up-to-date information ● Rapidly changing population

A New Census Every Time

How do Canadians receive their forms? ● Most forms delivered by mail ● In rural or remote areas, delivered in person

The Census of Population Most households receive a short questionnaire Basic questions such as ● age ● gender ● marital status

Sampling. A sample of households (1 in 5) receive a longer questionnaire Short version + 46 more on ● employment ● ethnic origin ● education ● income ● language

On-line Data Collection in 2006 ● Census questionnaire now available on-line ● 25% of households responded by Internet

Computer Processing Begins When all forms returned the responses are entered into a computer. ● Data is sorted and cross- referenced.

Data is Available On-line at ● Community Profiles ● E-Stat ● Census Dat a
