Factors contributing to inadequate solid waste management in Nairobi: A case study of Kawangware

Inadequate solid waste management (SWM) has been consistently high in Nairobi. Waste management problems result from a set of interacting elements which include social, cultural, political and economic aspects.

This study will investigate the factors contributing to inadequate solid waste management in Kawangware area in Nairobi County. Data collection will be from both households and business premises. It will involve assessment of the level of knowledge/awareness on solid waste disposal, the methods used in disposal and the cost incurred in solid waste disposal.

A sample size of 50 households and 50 business setups will be randomly selected for the study. Data collection will be done through administering questionnaires, conducting face-to-face interviews and by observation within the area of study. Data entry and analysis (descriptive) will be done using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS).

Tables and figures will be used for data presentation and interpretation. The results will enhance the understanding of relevant stakeholders involved to the causes of inadequate solid waste management, give proper recommendations and come up with clear policy guidelines on SWM.

Key words: solid waste management, disposal, awareness, cost
