Green Building Green building refers to new and emerging building technologies that have a low impact on the environment Recycling, water conservation and new materials, these all make a difference on the way a building is erected 2 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Traditional Construction Traditionally, construction would just happen, without much thought as to the impact on the environment Usually trees would be leveled on a new site without thought to the future Building materials would be shipped in from all over the world, without any thought to the way it was manufactured or shipped 3 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Environmental Impact With green building, a lot of thought and preplanning goes into the building Where do materials come from, how were they made, how does the building use and produce energy New building technologies have allowed for buildings to have a low carbon footprint 4 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Carbon Footprint When you walk in the sand, you leave a foot print In the same ideal, when a building is constructed, it also leaves a footprint on the land It can drastically change the make up or operation of the environment The “carbon footprint” is a way of measuring the impact a building has on the environment Now green buildings make an effort to have a zero carbon footprint on the world There is a rating systems developed just for this type of construction 5 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

LEED Rating System There is a rating system for green building It is known as LEED or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design The more sustainable a building is designed, the higher the LEED rating There are different levels, with Platinum Level being the highest rating achieved Some governments have begun to give incentives to buildings that meet certain levels of LEED ratings 6 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.
