FOUNDATIONS OF ALGEBRA POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE NUMBERS

THE NUMBER LINE

POSITIVE NUMBERS Definition: Positive number - a greater than zero

NEGATIVE NUMBERS Definition: Negative Number- a number less than zero

OPPOSITE NUMBERS Definition: Opposite numbers – that are the same distance from zero in the opposite direction

INTEGERS Definition: Integers – are all the whole numbers and all of their opposites on the negative number line including zero

HELPFUL HINTS If you do not see a negative or positive sign in front of a number it is positive. 9 or +9 If a number is negative there is more than one way to represent it. -10 or +-10 or - 10

NUMBERS IN THE REAL WORLD Positive and Negative Numbers are used to measure temperature. Red – Positive Blue - Negative

NUMBERS IN THE REAL WORLD Positive and Negative Numbers are used to measure Sea Level. Feet Above the Water is Positive Feet Below the Water is Negative
