Blue Valley AT Blue Valley Sped SETTing the Stage for Success

Assistive Technology and Special Education The TEAM Approach - a work in progress- we will team and work together to find solutions for students

Where to begin …

Keep this in mind…. Your goal with AT is to improve, increase, or maintain the functional capabilities of your student.

SETT Framework It’s tempting to jump to the tool; but it is the last step. It’s a framework in which the team builds a shared vision of what technology might be needed, how it will be used after a common understanding of the student, the environments, and tasks are determined. The framework is a guided discussion that leads the team, to make an informed reasonable decision supported by data.

What if my team thinks that a student may need AT support? What steps do we take? Meet as a building team to review /SETT for this student Completed SETT framework or similar paperwork to demonstrate detailed understanding of need The Case-Manager or Related Service Staff can- the AT team- with student-needs, concerns and list of technology team would like to trial.

FAPE: According to the definitions contained in the Act, a "free appropriate public education" consists of educational instruction specially designed to meet the unique needs of the handicapped child, supported by such services as are necessary to permit the child "to benefit" from the instruction. Appropriate does not mean a district must provide the "best" education or one designed to maximize a student's potential. However, the program must be based on the student's unique individual needs and be designed to enable the student to benefit from an education. In other words, the student must be making progress. Free and Appropriate Education :

Sometimes …we think it’s all about the high tech- when low tech-simple options work just as well for our students- watch this:

Did you know? Boardmaker activities available to you! ALREADY CREATED- yep! Boardmaker Achieve

A few students bring in their own- devices huh? There are students; teams have determined an iPad is necessary due to communication needs or enables them access to the curriculum- therefore are district owned devices.

AAC- Augmentative and Alternative Communication- several students have an Application/ App titled; Proloquo2Go which assists students with communication. Robin Lyon is available to train- staff, and families. Please if any one on your team needs assistance which that App.

Technology is powerful and can make a difference-
