Solving Multiplication and Division Equations Lesson 2-7

CCS: 6.EE.5. Understand solving an equation as a process of answering a question: which values from a specified set, if any, make the equation or inequality true? Use substitution to determine whether a given number in a specified set makes an equation true. 6.EE.6. Use variables to represent numbers and write expressions when solving a real-world or mathematical problem OBJECTIVES: Solve one-step equations using multiplication and division Evaluate exponents

Procedure Isolate the variable by performing the inverse operation on the number that is attached to the variable. The inverse of multiplication is division. The inverse of division is multiplication. Use the “Golden Rule.” Perform the same operation on the other side of the equal sign.

Example m ÷ 3 = 10 The inverse of division is multiplication. x 3 x 3 Repeat the operation on the other side. 30 m =

Check. Use the original equation. m ÷ 3 = 10 30 ÷ 3 = 10 10 = 10

Example 2 The inverse of multiplying is dividing. 7b = 105 ÷ 7 ÷ 7 1 5 105 7 b = 15 7 3 5 35

Check 7b = 105 7(15) = 105 105 = 105

Explain what you would do to solve the following equation: c ÷ 63 = 8 MULTIPLY each side of the equation by 63 to undo the equation. C ÷ 63= 7 C x 63= 7 x 63 C= 441 How many people thought the answer was 9?

Exponents Review

Vocabulary exponent – the number of times a number is multiplied by itself. base – the number that is being multiplied. exponent 83 base This is read “8 to the 3rd power” or “8 cubed.” It means 8 x 8 x 8.

Evaluating Exponents 25 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 32 = 6 x 6 x 6 = 216 63 1.34 = 1.3 x 1.3 x 1.3 x 1.3 = 2.8561
