Bottle Rockets Aliya Hakim Science Olympiad Design Portfolio

Components and how they work The Liter bottles act as the bottle rocket. The pieces of wood act as a base for the rocket. The tire pump, pumps the air until the valve can’t hold it and it shoots off. The tire pump, pumps the air until the valve can’t hold it and it shoots off. The rubber stopper hold the air until it cant hold any more. The Manila Folders act as the wings of the rocket. The tire valve helps get the air into the rocket.

Materials Four 2 liter bottles Scissors Pieces of wood Roll of tape Tire pump Rubber stopper Tire valve 6 manila folders

Design Plan Take two bottles and cut them in half with Scissors. Take the half bottle and tape it to the full bottle so it looks a giant bottle with two caps. Do the same with the other bottles. Take the Manila Folders and cut out some fins and tape them on at 90 degree angles. Take the bicycle tire valve and stick it in the rubber stopper. Take the full bottles and fill them up with water. Seal it with the stopper/tire valve. Place the rocket on the wooden platform and connect the pump to the valve assembly. Pump until there is to much pressure the valve can hold. Make sure you place it on a wood surface before you launch Take two bottles and cut them in half with Scissors. Pros and Cons I think the Manila Folders would be better then construction paper because it is thicker and it would be better then poster board because it is less weight but not as thin. I would rather use wood then cardboard because wood is more stable. I would rather use wood then cardboard because wood is more stable.

Test Plan Find a wide open space with little trees. (Soccer field) Pump it up until it has no more room to hold the air, it will go flying without any parachute. Make sure you place it on a wood surface before launching
